Wire colors on Alternator

My alternator on the new motor is not charging. Can anyone please tell me what wire is the one that excites the alternator to get it charging? I think that is the problem.

Look for the "F" terminal

The field wire starts the charging if you can see a "F" on the alt. Are you running a Motorola, 10-SI AC Delco, or what type of alt? Also did you have to modify the big round plug for the wiring harness, I seem to remember you saying something about it in another thread? OR... try this>>>

I think there are 4 wires going to the alternator that I have. Yes I did have to modify the harness. There was a pin that when I took it out everything (but the alternator) seemed to work fine. I think that wire must be the field wire. I am very familiar with how they work, I just need to know what wire it was to do the test. :D:D Thanks

Jon, I can't remember all colors for sure or exact wire gauges but try this.

#8 Orange, hot all the time should connect to battery cable on starter

#16 purple is switched with the ignition circut

#16 pink or red is battery sense, hot all the time again goes to main cable on starter

In the early boat harness there were 2 #8 wires to the dash, they completed the circut between the alternator and battery. A new style engine harness only has a #8 for the main power.

Well the problem was corrosion on the alternator bolt. It was so corroded that even with heat on it the stud broke off. Oh well. No bid deal. I had a brand new self exciting alternator in stock and dropped it on there :D:D I then had to plug the electric choke wire into the igition wire and it is all good :D:D
