Facebook tech.

How many of you guys are on FB? Some of the posts in the powerboat swap shop there, blow my mind.

Last year, there was a guy with a 454/alpha boat. Fresh engine. Ran hot. I advised going thru the typical things, like making sure impeller was good, no restrictions on flow thru the system, like a clogged oil cooler, etc. I was then proceeded to be schooled that his problem is actually because he doesnt have a water thermostat, and therefore thats causing the overheating. How the water is moving too fast thru the engine, not taking away the heat, etc. Literally had guys calling me a fuktard, and how moving the water too fast thru the engine will make it overheat. This is a raw water cooled engine. Anyhow, The owner of the boat took the boat to this guy, and all was gonna be fixed.

Last week I see the boat for sale, parted out. I messaged the owner, asking what happened? Since last year, he's blown up 3 engines. Getting out of boating now!

Today, theres a guy on there with a stroker 489. He showed his build specs. 489ci, with 242/248 112LSA roller camshaft. With STOCK exhaust. Stock as in , stock cast iron, with silent choice diverters. he plans to run it around 5000RPM max. I mentioned, that not only is that too much cam for what he's doing, its going to revert water with that exhaust, not to mention the exhaust simply choking that build. He said "eh, I understand. Im going to have to make some adjustments when I get it running".

I for one, am very thankful for oso. Back when I knew very little about marine engines, I got some solid advice here. Some of these guys are on the road to disaster over there.

I have absolutely no interest in Facebook. Maybe I'm just old school but, nothing about Facebook apeals to me.
Are there good deals to be had there?
What's the driving factor to log in there?
I'm not busting balls, just wondering.

Also, I too am very thankful for the wealth of good info here.
I've learned a bunch and bought most of my stuff for my project from the membership here.

As for the facebook powerboat swap shop section, its filled with bad advice, overpriced parts, overpriced boats, and pure junk. Just about every post turns into a pi$$ing match. Its great entertainment.

I remember the one about the overheating. Comical as I know one of the guys giving you guff over what I thought was good advice. Isn't he banned from oso? nuff said.

deals? sometimes.....
drive to log in? well one real good one is Ron Keegan, the other a few times was Phil, but overall it is amazing some things I read.....

I think FB is fun most of the time, my personal page I try to post fun or funny things.... USUALLY...

there is good and bad info all over, luckily most of us know enough who to listen to......

MILD THUNDER 01-18-2015 07:51 PM

Its a great place to find used beat up parts, for more than what you can buy them new for.

Lets not forget the huge group of people who think the TRS drive is good for 1000HP over there. :bigbird:

bck 01-18-2015 07:56 PM

How do you find this swap shop thing on Facebook?

Easy with the over priced stuff! My wife might take offense lol

abones 01-18-2015 08:05 PM

Wow sounds like I'm missing .....nothing

Don't have a Facebook account, don't need one at my age, my kids have them and report some of the boating crap to me when I need a good chuckle!

don't plan on joining, maybe OSO should have a "Facebook update" thread I nominate Mild to be the reporter! JK

What you make your poor wife go thru ....

bwd 01-18-2015 08:25 PM

Its the same there as it is here. Same jokers flooding the page with the same stuff they pedal here for the same money. Once in a while at either site you will find something reasonable that you need. Who else has heard of the 60% rule when buying used parts? Be that as it may both sites are a good asset for finding and selling used parts, deal or no. You just have to be aware.

BUP 01-18-2015 08:27 PM

I have been selling NEW OEM parts and OEM repair service manuals, plus have one boat listed on there. I do not deal in junk nor never have. I do see what your talking about posted on the site everyday. There is a lot of OSO people on there as well selling there parting out boat parts, engines & drives just like up here in the swap shop. The site has more rec stock boaters on it than here so some of those people are not as advance with mechanical abilities. Just saying.

Nmbr1GMfan 01-18-2015 08:37 PM

My Facebook is comprised off Drag Race stuff (new and old) old school Offshore Powerboat stuff and I love the Scarab KV page. Tons off old pics and info.

offshorexcursion 01-18-2015 09:31 PM

So glad that I unjoined the fb swap shop months ago.....

Young Performance 01-18-2015 10:51 PM

I started checking it out when I first found it on Facebook. It took all of about 10 minutes to realize that it wasn't for me. One of the guys that works for me is always on it and he fills me in on the abortion that it is. I'm glad, cause that means I don't have to suffer through it. It really is terrible.

ICDEDPPL 01-18-2015 11:23 PM

I was just thinking today 90% of swap shop posts are a complete waste of my time... I`m not sure why I even bother, the stuff posted is mind boggling.
Its like an accident you don`t wanna look but you still do.

Eddie it would be like you trying to explain trigonometry to preschoolers.

Though it would be fun to sit back and watch you school some of these clowns for a while.and listen to their reply's.

Young Performance 01-18-2015 11:58 PM

I love helping people. I'll make time for it. However, I refuse to waste my time helping someone that doesn't want to listen or have to put up with the retarded responses. I will just message the guy and try to help him that way or have him just call me.

cig92 01-19-2015 08:46 AM

face book is nothing more than smoke and mirrors, period the end. look at the photos that people post of themselves and what there are doing, either stroking their egos or the picture looks nothing like them lol. smoke and mirrors

j21black 01-19-2015 08:53 AM

That is probably my favorite page on Facebook....

Sheer entertainment value is through the roof....

There are a couple of good guys on there...

I have purchased some Marine audio equipment (NIB) off the site and sold a prop in about 10 seconds after I posted it, granted it was clean, in great shape, and priced well....

Would I take advice from the page, doubtful....I would ask on a forum....

I do like looking at all the boats that get posted up for sale when I have nothing better to do....

Crude Intentions 01-19-2015 09:29 AM

You are spot on Joe. Facebook is mostly comedy to me. Entertainment. We get it in many forms. Lol.

VoodooRob 01-19-2015 09:58 AM

I logged onto the Facebook Swap Shop last night for the first time. There was a great deal on a dealer blowing out some speaker inventory, besides that boats for sale and opinions by people.

FIXX 01-19-2015 04:07 PM

Facebook...What's that....

Nmbr1GMfan 01-20-2015 08:35 AM

I love the Classic Offshore Upholders page, great photos.

Eliminated572 01-23-2015 07:47 AM

Hey its not ALL bad. I just unloaded a bunch of low hour parts from my last 572 build...made for a good day for about 6 people out there. And my shelves are finally empty again. Oh, and a set of props I had 2 hrs on.... Like any tool box, you'll have your sharper ones and ...well...not so sharp. Just need to use some common sense when dealing with guys. About the same as our OSO swap shop in reality.

Now the passion for powerboats group can bring some eye candy and a few cool stories and builds...yet has been turning into more of a porn site here lately.....I have enough of those so don't f@ck with my boating sites!! ;)
