I just did a similar build last week but with stock 088 heads and a Holley HP 1000 cfm carb. i used car exhaust on the dyno and made 580 hp and 620 TQ at 5300 RPM

I understand that I could make more power with a custom cam built for my specs. But at the same time I believe it could make pretty decent power with most likey the best out of the box cam.

I would guess more HP and torque than a Alpha can handle.......

you pick a hp goal and alot of cams will get you there. |
With a AFR 315 head combination there is an easy 25 HP available.

I don't think it would be money well spent to spend all that money on a nice set of heads and put the wrong cam in the motor. Not only will it make less power on the top end. But it will be sluggish. Add a Carburetor that is entirely too big and it gets even worse.

BB, I actually thought you were being sarcastic with your first post. I don't think the 741 is way out of line for this build. My only thought would be that you could make the same, or more power with a more modern lobe design that is a little easier on valve train parts. if I already had a 741 though, I'd probably run it. I'm going to guess 635 if you've got your valve train sorted.

The 741 is an agressive lobed cam compared to what? I know of at least a dozen engines that have ran that cam past 300 hours without issue. Also, many have used that cam and made very good power for an off the shelf marine cam. With everything from 088 heads to afr 315s ..etc.
In certainly no cam expert but id be willing to bet the lobes on that 741 are alot easier on the valvetrain than these .681, .697 , +400 lobes that have the same or similar .050 duration numbers. The crane merc 525efi cam is fairly similar to the 741 grind, and a buddy just freshened his 525s in his 37 active thunder that had 500+ hours. No issues at teardown. |

while we are talking about this deal, I think the dominator is way overkill for this....
