What would cause 3 intake valves to leak on a diesel?

Wondering what could cause multiple intake valves to not seal properly on a low hour Diesel

If it's like some diesels they don't put a seat into head, they just grind valve into casting and that to me is not a great idea, a buddy just realized this on a 6.4 Ford with international diesel, I could be wrong but sonething to look at...

possible burnt valve

Detroit 12.7

Yes more info what kind, application, and you said low hours, does that mean low factory hours or low hours after someone has been in it? How do you they are leaking?

Brandonb_05 03-11-2015 05:24 PM

I have rebuilt a few of older Detroits mostly the two stroke Detroits 16v, 12v, 8v, and 6v

If it is in a newer truck with emissions and has a egr system that is not properly working the egr issue could gum up the intake causing the valves not to seal. Just one possibility, really need more info.

Is this running now what is it in? Bad valve springs/broken out of adjustment?

Brandonb_05 03-11-2015 05:43 PM

Sounds like 14 Apache needs to fabricate you up some piston cooling jets.:D

Factory Remanufactuer 12.7 built by Detroit. in a semi with a 100 thousand on it. They have been playing around with different turbos and ECM tunes during the miles.

Cylinders would leak down a 100 lbs in 20 seconds on a leakdown test.

Said to be badintake valves.

Brandonb_05 03-11-2015 06:27 PM

It sounds like the only way to truly find out what's going on is to pull the valve cover inspect, and go from there. If nothing is found there you might have to pull the head. Double check to make sure it's on the correct stroke when performing the leak down test as well. I don't know much about the smaller truck motors but the big boy Detroits can be confusing to figuring out the position each cyclinder is on going by the balancer (16 cyclinder motors)

I belong to the Mercedes discussion group -- and I have had 3 Benz diesels. What you state is a very common issue with diesel engines not being run for longer periods and hard -- Run it like it was stole-- the more you run it the better.

Does this motor have variable valve timing?

tommymonza 03-12-2015 12:23 AM

Pre 03 no EGR or DPF. No variable timing. Head is already off.Head was reconditioned 100 thousand ago by Detroit.

Brandonb_05 03-12-2015 11:45 AM

Check the valve seats for good sealing surfaces. Before that head goes back together it would be a good idea to lap each of the valves in by hand and check the patterns on the sealing surfaces to make sure they will properly seal.
