Should it blue the end of a rod when using a rod heater to install the wrist pins??

Yes, it will discolor the metal a little, but doesn't hurt a thing. Don't use any more heat than necessary to get the pin to slide in/out.

put the pins in the freezer overnight. the greater temp diff, the easier to install.
