Helical asymmetrical oil pump

Just thought I would throw this out there.
Mellings "Shark Tooth Pump" Check it out http://www.mellingselectperformance.com/

Pretty cool design. At first glance looks like an sea pump impeller...

mark, what are your thoughts on the helical gears, pros&cons?

apollard 04-15-2015 07:52 AM

Not exactly new, lots of engines have had helical cut oil pumps. Older Fords & Studebakers for a couple.

getrdunn 04-15-2015 08:04 AM

Studebakers and older fords would be new to me also. Anything much past my 69 anyway. Did a quick google search and sounds like it was tailored toward the new sbc. Didn't spend much time on it though.

I'd have to be really out of things to fix in my boat before I started to worry about oil pump efficiency.

Truth. Lol.

Cool, but what problem is this solving?

No idea. Only thing I see is that they made the gears harder (more expensive) to produce.

This is Mellings Data
Significant reduction in pressure ripple,
Reduction in torque ripple in pump drive.
Reduction in spark scatter.
Improved distributor gear wear and intermediate shaft wear.
Improved sealing of gear tips.
Reduced internal leakage.
Improved efficiency and performance.
Increased inlet vacuum.
Primes Faster.

i think i will look into one of these.

i can only find information for the sbc pump, does anyone know if they offer this pump for a bbc?

Young Performance 04-16-2015 09:53 AM

All of the benefits make sense. Look at it this way....a Whipple supercharger with it's helical rotors is much more efficient than a roots blower with very little to no helix. The Whipple moves more air, seals better, doesn't take as much power to drive, etc. All of those can apply to the oil pump.

Mike,

They will not have a design for the BBC. The SBC pump is a 7 spur gear pump vs. 9 spur gear for the BBC. The torque and pressure ripple are more aggressive in the 7 spur design. while they are significantly dampened in the 9 spur.
