Bosch oil filter, thread buggered up

I changed oil tonight(had about 35hrs on it) and when I unscrewed the bosch 3510 filter i dropped it in the bildge. (Stock location on SBC). I stuck finger in the hole to grab it and jabbed myself with a needle sliver of damaged thread. Filter was installed by hand and came off normally. I checked the thread pipe on the block and it was smooth and seemed perfect but the thread on the filter looks like crap., mAnyone ever hear of a oil filter thread failing? It's a bummer the flow is out thru the big center , hopefully nothing entered the motor. I ran the boat last weekend and once when I fired it up to leave restaurant it was idling slowly and oil pressure was lower then normal (about 10psi) but I chalked it up to a slow loopy idle but now the filter filter has me worried. Tomorrow night I will cut the filter open and may send a oil sample to blackstone since I haven't emptied the vac container yet.

Is the filter a remote mount. Check threads etc on the housing nipple and blow lines to be on the safe side however I would imagine it's just one of the threads from the filter and not the nipple. Anything in the oil when you changed it? Good idea to inspect the filter. Don't use a saw. Possible just a coincidence the oil pressure was down however perhaps it was due for a change. Can you get to drain plug? Inspect the oil filter nipple really well also as I'm sure you have. Keep us informed. I don't use Bosch filters but maybe do a google on them also.

i have seen some ugly threads on oil filters,i don,t think you have anything to worry about.

The filter is not remote, it is mounted on the block on port side (down low) . I checked the nipple really well and those threads seemed smooth and intact. The thread burr was only on the filter. I haven't inspected the oil yet for fitter, it's syoll in the container after sucking it out the dipstick. I cannot get to the drain plug on the pan. (Without engine removal) . I will post more info tomorrow after I get filter apart and look at the oil for glitter.

Ya I would have to say it was just the filter as we all seem to think. It's possible with the weight of the filter being full of oil that when u got down to the last thread or so the weight itself could have pulled loose a thread on the filter. it coulda happen to any filter however maybe switch over to wix or another brand.

Be sure and let us know how the inside of your filter looks. I'm sure it will be fine.

I have a few hundred oil filters here (WIX) - I'll go finger a few and see if that is normal.

Okay....fingering oil filters is not normal. But I will do it for you.

Just hope my customers don't find out I fingered their stuff, may be too personal.

LOL.

I think there was a tiny but of thread engaged and it pulled out into that sliver as the filter dropped.

Btw was that u that had the thread a while back on all the different oil filters. That was an excellent thread.

I don't remember.

I have fingered about 20 filters today. I will do some more and report back before I leave.

Gosh I hope no one sees me. I've been decreet so far.

Cabin fever and crappy NE weather can make you do the impossible. Now I know why I left the NE over 30 years ago. 37 for the high and snow upstate NY. Wear finger condoms just to be on the safe side.

I love winter up here.

Our winters produce billion dollar tourist industries, so some people must like it.

These photos where taken (not from me) about 100 yds from my shop.

Looks like no one's enjoying the frozen lake huh. Hmmmm

230 teams competed this year on 20 rinks. That's a lot of beer ! LOL.

Wow that was taken this past weekend - looks warm - I was really just messing with you completely. I hear you - use to flat track on the ice in my motorcycle days in the NE. Heck been to your neck of the woods on my street bike back in the 70's & early 80's more times than I can count in the summer. Will say I do not miss Christmas from Dec to the end of April. But NE summers I do miss badly.

Is that Lake Winny ? My brother goes to the big bike event every year.

Yup. I'm right there . He'll drive right by my place.

I'm 3/4 mile from Laconia (Meredith) Harley Davidson.

Alright, done finger fkin oil filters. All threads pretty damn good. Just a few with some small cuts in the thread that catches your skin but none that cut thru, nor have any metal hangers (shrapnel)

Your mileage may vary.

I took some pics of the sliver, it is towards the top of the thread but I don't the the start . I also cut the filter apart and saw nothing in the pleats. Looked at the oil some in the sun and no glitter. I left a message for the Bosch automotive technical support today and haven't heard back.
