I think he was the one complaining about PayPal...

Pm commandersander on here if I'm a liar. I bought the motors from him. And he told me the blowers were brand new beside basically dyno time and made 653hp on 5psi I believe. It pushed my boat to 94.8 on GPS and I literally only ran it for maybe 15 hrs.

Only 5 PSI with the blower set to run at 2:1 (100% overdriven) on an iron-head 502? That setup should have been making closer to double that amount of boost. On the positive side of things, the carbs seem to work really well (especially after I had them fixed from shipping damage that UPS wouldn't cover).

Not trying to point fingers or start a flame war, but this hasn't been the best experience. I seriously doubt that this setup was brand new when you got it. Anyway, I'll make it all work.

TomZ 06-09-2015 02:59 PM

So I listened to the video of the engine running on the dyno, and though we couldn't hear it in the control room, the mic on my phone picked up a lot of belt squeal once hard on it. It's hard to hear, but definitely there. I didn't have the blower off last night (dead tired), but did notice that the belt was starting to come apart in the center ribs (glad I ordered a brand new one from Bando).

Hopefully that's the good news. Yeah UPS isn't worth anything when the damage stuff. My buddy shipped a drive one time made a nice wooden crate for it. When it came back to him it looked like one fork from a fork lift went through the crate and put a whole in the lower unit the size of a fork. UPS said it wasn't packaged properly. "Note to self" when packaging for UPS make sure the package is forklift proof.

TomZ 06-09-2015 03:37 PM

In this case, all 100 lbs of blower and intake/carbs were thrown into a box, taped shut, sent. The box showed up with parts of the blower sticking out of it. UPS wouldn't even talk to me.

Well the stuff shouldn't be thrown in the box but UPS shouldn't throw the boxes around either and believe me that's all they do is throw the stuff.

Agreed. We deal with UPS all the time here with our business. If it isn't packaged extremely well, then don't count on it making it to a destination safely that's for sure!

Certainly sounds like you need a new belt. But from what I've seen on these serpentine belt driven blowers, esp prochargers, is if there's a belt slippage issue, the boost usually takes a chit at some point on the dyno pull, esp in the upper rpm band.

I'd still pull the blower and take a look at the clearances

TomZ 06-10-2015 10:38 AM

Yep. I plan to pull it anyway so that I can get the engine back in the boat. There isn't enough clearance to get it in and out fully dressed.

The overall thought here is that we're dealing with a tired blower (only making 5 lbs of boost at 100% overdriven on a 502 is a definitely a clue), and a bad belt. She'll still run well for the season, and I'll tackle the rest after the season is finished.

I had a 509 with 320 pro topline heads with JE 8.5-1 comp and crane hyd roller. I had a 250 charger with no intercooler and small pulley. It made 8-9 pounds at 5200 with a 26 4blade in my260 velocity. Roughly 650. Hp.

Thanks. My point exactly. Tired blower.

TomZ 06-10-2015 02:21 PM

Tired blower... this pisses me off.

Checked the clearances: .012 toward the rear of the case, .014 toward the front.

Well, I'm not sacrificing my summer to wait on my blower to be rebuilt, but at least I now know why this thing isn't building the boost that was expected.

MILD THUNDER 06-10-2015 02:23 PM

No surprise after those boost numbers on your setup. That sucks tom .

I think i asked this question earlier, not sure if i got the answer or not. So what is the recommended clearance on the rotor to case?
I would like to check my 250 tonight.

MILD THUNDER 06-10-2015 02:30 PM

Normal is about .004-.006 on a used 250 with some time on it.

I guess the "brand new blower with only dyno time" goes hand in hand with the NIB inverter. What a bunch of BS!! $3k f'ing dollars for what will probably end up being a heat pump once it's in the boat. Yes, I'm a little mad.

260Velocity 06-10-2015 07:30 PM

250 clearance

Well checked mine and it is at .008-.009 on each Teflon strip near top of the case

Just keep in mind that boost PSI is a reference of airflow restriction. With your blower not getting hot at all,(blower not working very hard) then it could possibly be that your camshaft and head flow is working really well and thus your boost psi. reading is low.
Just a thought.

Appreciate it, but see the post above about the clearances being way out of spec. My understanding is that anything over .008 needs servicing. There's no way this blower will build strong boost until its serviced.

Yes I read that as well and this is true. Rebuild time and see what she dos after that.

MILD THUNDER 06-11-2015 07:20 PM

Tom, can you get it rebuilt asap and re dyno? That would be cool. :D

TomZ 06-11-2015 08:18 PM

Engine goes in Saturday. I have a friend of a friend that works on big diesels. I'm told that he may be able to get the blower done at his shop, quickly.

Dyno'ing again... I'm going to run it for now, but I'll probably pull it at the end of the season and hit it again.

TomZ 03-01-2016 09:54 PM

Got the blower to the shop today... .016 clearance between the strips and the case. Yep, it was far from being "recently rebuilt."

The good news is that it'll be ready in a couple of weeks (unless some other issue pops up with this blower).
