i bought 2 of wette vette's pressure relieve valves back in march, the kits comes complete with valves, watter jacket "T's" and all brass fittings. i bought them thinking i would need them, but my engine builder decided to do something different with my system. i would like to see these things working, i've talked to people who have them, everyone i've spoke with likes them but i haven't had the opportunity to actually see them in operation. they are brand new, never used, still in the box, i think i paid $120 or $130 for each kit, if someone wants them i'd let them go for $90 or so.

I have a pair of 496HO's in a 353 Formula, and recently had a similar problem, with the water pressure rising to 20 lbs at idle W/ water temp running 170-180 and the starboard exhaust running hot. we found the steering cooler was partially clogged with debris restricting the water-flow.

We fixed this by removing the intake hose on the main heat exchanger, and clamping a water hose to it then remove the blue drain plugs from the seawater pump, then back flush with the water hose. We filled the bilge with a bunch of debris. After that every thing was normal. 3-5 lbs @ idle and 25-30 @ WOT.

If you have had allot of rain and junk in the water where you are, like we have had, you may want to check this. I have now done this 3 times in the last couple weeks. Time to add strainers!

Can someone put me in touch with Wette Vette (Craig)? I need to renew my membership (no access to PM's) but I need to get in touch with him pronto about the kit he has for water pressure. A number or email address? My email is: [email protected].

Thanks,
Dave

Mercury racing- part #863208A3 valve kit-relief list each $120.48 BAM Marine $102.72 mercruiserparts.com [email protected] . I'm finishing up my installation now, after rebuilding the motor due to leaking headers and head gasket. -Sleek Willy

Re: Water pressure; Looking for the real answer!

Thanks Sleek....I've got the merc numbers but am trying to get in touch with Wette Vette as he has made his own pressure relief valve and it's adjustable where the MERC part is not.....how difficult is the install with the MERC stuff? Where did you plumb the relief hose?

Re: Water pressure; Looking for the real answer!

If I wanted to tap into the existing bilge pump hose could I plumb the pressure relief valve to it? I was thinking that I could put a T in the bilge hose and put a check valve on the bilge side and another check valve on the relief valve side and use the same thru-hull dump? I have found the check valves in the McMaster-Carr catalog and they are inexpensive. Would you recommend increasing the size of the hose from 3/4" to perhaps 1" or wouldn't it matter? I just want to make sure that I can get rid of all the water without having flow problems. Any other suggestions?

Re: Water pressure; Looking for the real answer!

Perhaps welding a 3/4" bung to the exhaust would be easier or better?

I ran a seperate threw transom, and the over flow sprays on my outdrive. works great as an out drive cooler. Then I bought a billet out drive cap, and now the over flow feeds the cap.

Kanookster,

You seem pretty up to snuff with this as you have been involved with this post from the beginning. Here's a scenario for you....I don't want the boat to look "butchered up" by cutting holes in it for this and that. You have always recommended a thru-hull dump versus in the exhaust or combined with bilge. What would you do to have the cleanest install and have the fewest headaches and still making sure that everything works right AND looks good? Perhaps another thru-hull fitting right beside the bilge fitting? Or maybe dumb into the exhaust.....those might be my best options.

Re: Water pressure; Looking for the real answer!

In my stingray I had a bung fitting welded in my silent choice diverter. (you see it in one of the pics I sent you), In my Sunsation, I have a nice S.S. thru transom dump I purchased from Eddie Marine. You could "Y" into your bilge dump, but be sure the dump is a minimum of 3/4", and that you put a check valve in the hose that goes to the bilge pump. My Sunsation has two 1/2" bilge pumps, So I oppted to have the valve dump thru it's own 3/4" dump.

Re: Water pressure; Looking for the real answer!

When I put IMCO's on mine the water pressure went thru the roof. After searching OSO, talking with mechanics, waisting my time, it dawned on me that I have dry stacks that have a small hole on the bottom side of the pipe to drain water from the pipe.

The solution - - - Make hole bigger. A drill and a little effort on the stainless and the water pressure was back in line. The question is would this fix or a similar one work on a wet exhaust.
