Smooth as silk when cranking. Idles rough and just started happening. I have a feeling it might be the pickup in the distributor because of the bad tach reading.
Still looking for suggestions.

can you put another carb on it?could be a worn distributor shaft wobbling causing erratic timing, put a timing light on it.

Carb is fully rebuilt this winter so I have eliminated it as a potential issues. The tach not running right leads me to believe it is the distributor, but looking for experience if that is the right thought.

spray the inside of distributor w/ wd40 to clean it, my msd box went bad last summer and did the same thing, replaced the ignition box and all is perfect, it would miss and stumble and tach was jumping , it may be the control module in your distributor.

The new distributor is on the bench waiting to be installed today. Hopefully this will be the solution. Anybody have timing recommendations for a baseline. I was told 16 and 32 degrees.

The new distributor has solved the poor running situation. Runs smooth as silk now. The issue of the bouncing tach is still there. Instead of the tach bouncing all over the place from 1000 to 6000 RPM it is bouncing at idle a few hundred RPM and then smooths out around 3000 RPM and above.
Any thought ore ideas on this one?

Check all your grounds. Make sure all ring terminals are nice and shiny, free of corrosion and make sure the block is clean at the mating surface. Then use a little dielectric grease on the terminals to prevent future corrosion.
