Pick up location with a notched transom?
I need to install a transom mounted water pickup for my 97 253 Checkmate Convincor. It has a small notch in the transom. I don't think I'll have enough room to mount the pickup on the notch. If I mount the pick up on the transom behind the notch will it possibly suck air? Thanks.

you could mount it in front of the notch. A lot of the cats have them pretty far forward. I've seen a 42' Outerlimits with the pickup 21' forward of the transom. Need to get clean water to the picup.

Some transoms can be a problem for mounting and of course you have to watch out mounting anything that is inline with the prop and its blades so it does not disrupt that water flow either.
Sometimes (few times) mounting a pickup grate in the bottom of the hull - like what the inboards and wakeboard boats use is the best option. I am saying this depending on the transom and not having a perfect location. We had a Checkmate years ago and had to go that route. The owner did nose cones and set backs (raised) needing water pick ups after it was all done and said. the transom / notch for his set up was not ideal for the mounting the pick ups in that area. |
Consider thru the bottom PU's. Clean water and could/should add +1-2 MPH. Look at the Stainless Marine PU's, engines will need to be out to re-rig.

Crap. I may just put my dual stage pump back in to feed the intercooler. I went back to a single stage pump when I updated my whole cooling system this year. I am planning on selling the boat and don't want to get too involved pulling the engine for a through hull fitting. Thanks for the replies guys.

Would this location work? It is away from the notch and out of the propeller's path. The pickup is fully extended and will probably have to come up a bit to be even with the bottom of the hull. I would like to swing it over to the right more but the upper right hand plate mounting bolt gets too close to the thru transom hole and I'm afraid it could break through into it. I'm using 5/16 lag bolts and 3m 5200 to seal it up. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not caring too much about the look of the installation. I just need this to work for me right now. The original angle to the right was much worse looking before I noticed the mounting bolt issue.
