Mercury 600sc???
 

I'm looking at a 38zx Daytona equipped with 600sc's. Im having a hard time finding information on these older engines. Are they a reliable setup? I'm going to assume that these are tired and in need of freshening. What kind of cost can I expect to freshen them? Any particular issues that I need to be aware of when looking at the boat? I plan to have a mechanic thoroughly inspect the power train, as well as have a survey performed should I decide to move forward.

Love that motor.. real strong runner... set up to run kinda rich so a bit thirsty but a good strong motor.

Just be aware the intake manifolds for the b&m 420 mega blower is no longer available, so if it was used in the salt or you intend to, you may be looking at switching to an 8-71 blower

Boat was originally in salt, but has been in freshwater since 05'. Thanks for the replies.

Mine ran great. Had to replace blower output shaft and coupler on the 420 bm blower shop has them out of hardened steel now.

The 600SC and 575SCI shared the same long block. 502 ci. Mild, 7.5:1 compression, very mild .550 lift, flat tappet cam, there's nothing really expensive in there and should not be too pricey to re-fresh. Upgrades like flat top pistons, good hyd roller cam selection, 871 blowers can make a lot more power and still retain reliability.

I basically built 600sc clones. Only difference is my cams, intercoolers and more boost. Good reliable relatively maintenance free motors.
