Saginaw to Brazilian actuator question.

I'm changing from the older Saginaw actuator to the newer Brazilian style, I have 2 questions (for now).
1) My newer Brazilian has the manifold adaptor for add on hyd. steering. I am not going with external hyd. at this time SO what do I do with the two hyd. fittings on the manifold? Do I just put a cap on each of them?
2) I have read here that I will need to replace the P/S hoses. Is that correct and why?
Thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge.

Hope I understand what you are asking, but swapping from the old style unit to the new the cylinder is no longer used, you loose the 2 small hoses, the other 2 just your pressure and return to pump, the newer one uses O-ring seats and usually need to be replaced, best way is to change the fitting on back of pump to use O-ring style as well and use a newer line, the return just a new style

I really do not understand what you are saying ezstriper.
Can anybody help me out. Thanks

Going from the old style to the new, you have to place the hoses. Its been a bit since I have converted one, but I believe the newer one is metric threads. Regardless, they don't have the same threads. The old style was a GM part that was used on the 69 to I believe 82 corvette power assist steering.

Also if you can post a pic of the adapter, I can tell you if you must remove it or you can just cap them

basicly you are replacing 2 componants with one, easy to do, the part that looks like just a cylinder with 2 hoses will not be replaced along with the 2 short hoses that connect to the valve, the valve mounts the same as the old and now you just have to change the lines to the new style

Here is a link to pictures of what I have. http://houston.craigslist.org/bpo/5308960760.html
Thanks

Ok... someone had external steering on that ... You can plug the brass fittings.

GLENAMY 242SS 11-10-2015 12:32 PM

OK so just plug the brass fittings until I can afford the externals of hyd. steering.
Now I think (?) the larger fitting (on the actuator) goes to the cooler and the smaller fitting is the hi-pressure side and goes to the pump, correct?
Gotta get hoses made.
Bawana thank you and all others for the help.

Bawana 11-10-2015 12:59 PM

Yes thats correct

ezstriper 11-11-2015 06:21 AM

will it work without ext cylinders ? has been modifyed for use with them...anyway heres a video of the old style showing the extra cylinder and the steel lines that are no longer used in the upgrade, they also make adapters for the use of your existing hoses, I just use the later hoses when I have done them in the past.

GLENAMY 242SS 11-11-2015 08:25 AM

anybody know the part number for the hose adapters?

Bawana 11-11-2015 03:52 PM

I didn't know they made adapters for that, but if anybody would have them it would be Imco. Give them a call

ezstriper 11-12-2015 07:31 AM

I got them form a merc dealer in Fl a few years back, they used to sell a update "kit" to install the newer valve on a older boat as the old one was dropped, ck with a merc dealer, they were brass with o-ring on the male side and a flair seat on the other

Send a PM to BUP, a knowledgeable member on here. I am sure he can help you out with those adapters.

GLENAMY 242SS 11-12-2015 08:25 AM

That is a good idea. I will also call Hardin today as they sometimes have NOS parts for "vintage problems" that are not listed in their catalogue.

Bawana 11-12-2015 09:57 AM

Did you call Imco, the sell alot of steering adapters, and fittings.

GLENAMY 242SS 11-12-2015 03:58 PM

IMCO, no cigar
Hardin, in Florida smoking cigars, this week
BUP, checking.

I had a about 1 minute to look at this as I know 100 % that merc new style actuator uses these fittings in the link below. What we have done many of times in the past for a new installed actuator with older lines (want to say 1994 ?? and up ) was to screw out the adapter fittings used on the newer actuators and then screw in your old pwr steering lines into the actuator - this has work all the time. Now back fitting older models than 1994 or maybe it was 1996 (memory) and back if I recall the holes and or the thread size was different.

If this is the case you have to find a male fitting that goes into the actuator with and female side that will allow you to screw in your older style power steering line fittings. Hope that makes sense. Or the other way is to update your power steering lines.

Here is the link of the new style actuator and the new press fittings (number 5 and 7 in the link below) - these are the ones that we have taken out to screw in the older pwr steering line fittings. MEMORY for the apps that will allow you to do so, - 1994 or somewhere 1996 to fairly current.

Here is a better pic of the newer style fittings in the link below - push in and push on adapters from Merc.

For older adaption early 90's and back - you need to try find the fittings like I said in post above because Merc wants you to buy / change the lines to new version kit to work with the newer style actuators or buy the complete updated kit.

Like I said you can only back fit so far, after that you are on your own trying to find fittings to make the older power steering line fittings to screw into the newer style actuators. It can be done if find the correct adapters to do so or have a hose / hydraulic company make you some lines that work with the new actuators..

That is where I am, If I had the quick connect (part# 22-865415) #5 on drawing I could try to find other (female side) part I guess from hose maker.
Well I was hoping for a simple kit with the adaptors, always the little simple chit that sets you back. It just seems crazy to spend $150-$200 for darn hose.
Off to hyd. hose shop to see what they can do. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks all for the help

BUP 11-12-2015 07:37 PM

Yes thats were they left you hanging with the older style apps. Thru Merc also there is a whole updated kit with newer actuator and hoses and fittings attached but it costs around 500 to 600 bucks.
