Looking for best Bilge Paint. Can you recommend?

Believe it or not. Good old rustolium , works great. Just do cleaning prep good.

cyrus77 11-16-2015 05:39 PM

Hello,
I asked around and heard:

Pettit
http://www.amazon.com/Pettit-Paint-E...ds=bilge+paint

Bilge coat
http://www.amazon.com/Interlux-Gray-...ds=bilge+paint

And 2 part Epoxy paint.

I heard epoxy paint was the most durable from the boat store.

Thoughts?

Gimme Fuel 11-16-2015 05:43 PM

Rustoleum with added enamel gardener catalyst works fantastic and wears awesome.

cyrus77 11-16-2015 05:46 PM

I put new stringers in the boat. I with epoxy. I like the idea of sealing it with more epoxy paint. I just do not want to experiment with Rustoleum if it is not a sure bet.

PARASAIL941 11-16-2015 05:48 PM

^^^ He's right , best bang for your buck is Rustoleum with a universal hardener. Durable , high gloss , and reasonable. I use it on all my commercial and pleasure boats . Good Luck !!!

Same here, with the hardner, it's great! Did mine two seasons ago and it looks like it was just done. Easy to clean, hard finish and really glossy. Goes on easy with mini rollers for the tight spots too...

Mach80 11-16-2015 07:51 PM

I have used the Interlux white in the past. Bought it on Amazon and was really happy with it.

beaver 3 11-16-2015 08:06 PM

ive done alot of research on this and rustoleum with hardener seems to be the way to go.

Flightplan 11-16-2015 08:26 PM

Where would one get this Rustoleum and hardener? They make a thousand different products. Which one?

JRider 11-16-2015 09:08 PM

Gel coat with Duratec additive. No cheezy implement paint.

f_inscreenname 11-16-2015 10:44 PM

Looks like I started a monster ....

Also used this and the rustolium for years. Hold up extremely well. Just mix in the recommended amount with your paint and let sit for a half hour before use. Dries hard as a rock in a hour.

Whatever Glassdave recommends is what I would use.

wfo1 11-17-2015 05:31 AM

Tile-clad from Sherwin wiliams. It's a two part epoxy that is tough as nails and sticks to anything. Definitely more expensive than rustoleum though.

You shouldn't be using paint as a sealer. That's what the fiberglass resin is supposed to do. Epoxy paint will chip, crack, and flake over time. If you think that it's going to seal water, I would think again.

x100 on the rust oleum that's what we used.

carter38 11-17-2015 07:51 AM

Awlgrip

tommymonza 11-17-2015 08:00 AM

150bucks for 2 gallons sherwin Williams epoxy. Probably take less than half that for your bilge and it covers so well I am sure you only need one coat.

The fumes from doing a bilge in Imron without a pressurized fresh air resprorator is a deadly mix.

Ignore this post...Gel coat is a big NO NO over epoxy. I used Sherwin Williams Macro Poxy to coat my Profile bilge, that stuff is thick, sticks to anything, and tough as hell.

ezstriper 11-17-2015 08:18 AM

Can't beat the rustoleum used it several times works like a champ and hard as nails !

ICDEDPPL 11-17-2015 06:08 PM

Another vote for Rustoleum , stuff holds up great, good price too.

kvogt 11-17-2015 06:37 PM

If your looking for the best. A good 2 part epoxy as a base with Awlgrip as top coat Is tough to beat. Not a cheap combo though.

As in any paint job, the prep is 90 percent of job.

Good call on the black where all the nasty soot /water / oil residue. Ect. Never see it being black.

ICDEDPPL 11-18-2015 12:10 AM

Yup, figured black would cure my OCD a little.

FIXX 11-18-2015 01:19 AM

black holds heat....

Sherwin Williams marine polyurethane coating..125 a gallon with a qt of hardener..the paint is like gelcoat and it will fill major voids..does not dull or yellow like rustolum..

ezstriper 11-19-2015 06:40 AM

5years on rustoleum and never seen dulling or yellowing even with a few bad oil downs

paul buckner 11-19-2015 07:17 AM

F-2 Speedy 11-19-2015 07:31 AM

I think this is what I used

http://www.rustoleum.com/product-cat...tective-enamel

f_inscreenname 11-20-2015 12:11 AM

I use this http://www.rustoleum.com/product-cat...tective-enamel
I mix 3Qts white to 1qt beige (little less) to get that off white fiberglass color.
I've also never had a staining issue.

I did the same exact thing with same exact paint to get that mid eighties Formula off white. I also used the Valspar hardener that is pictured earlier in this thread with the Rustoleum. I bought the hardener on line and the Rustoleum from Home Depot. Then just followed the Valspar mixing directions. Again, very pleased with the end product.

Rustoleum here. I got it from Lowes, straight up bright white. I did not use a hardener, and a half gallon did the entire bilge twice (in my 242). Hard as a rock and looks great! I've had the engine in and out twice, walked all over over it, dropped stuff on it... nothing hurts it.

are you Rustoleum guys using a primer?

Craney 03-18-2024 09:21 PM

I used Rustoleum and No primer just sanded everything.

TomZ 03-19-2024 02:21 PM

I redid the areas I could get to on the 311 with gray Rustoleum. It was a little lighter than the original Formula bilge paint - no primer - went on and stayed on without an issue. I've used with hardener and without. When it dries, it is super tough - I don't think a hardener is needed.
