Transom water pickup any advice ?

Whats the science behind those pickups ?

I am re-rigging a 24 Progression i/o and would like to run a transom mount water pickup for a few hose routing reason's in the engine bay. I am interested in the Imco Adjustable pickup , is there any specific to know about debt for example ?

Should I be blocking off the pickups on the lower of my bravo drive ? or is it unnecessary ?

Also a fresh water flush , pretty much just a T with a ball valve and garden hose adapter right ?

Sorry for all the post and question , wanna build this thing right within my budget.

Ram,

I would get with the experts on here such as John or Eric Teague concerning transom pickups and proper installation.

Best of luck,

Hey Ram,

I suggest to give us a call. We can help you with ALL of your plumbing needs. We have many styles of water pick-ups and water fittings, strainers, flush systems, etc (all SS), made in house. If you send me a few pictures of your transom (from the outside looking forward at it) and the engine compartment with your current layout, we can design a water system that will properly and simply work and fit in your boat.

I think when you put a transom mount pick up on they cut the hose in the gimbal area so water flows to help keep the drive cool.

It be nice to plumb it right back into a fitting dumping water over the top of the drive as well.

Exactly what I did on mine. Dumps right on the top cap.

You might want to contact Kevin at Progression too. If anybody knows how to rig a Progression, he does.

You can get the inner transom/gimble water intake fitting from Teague or CP.

I'm bringing water through the drive, into the gimble / inner transom and then through a 1" hose to a stainless through transom dump onto the drive top cap.

Very smart guys with the cooling the drive with the pick up !

Too Stroked I called at progression's a few time in the past with no returns of my call or anything ... Maybe he is just too busy but anyways ...

So my question really was how much lower than the transom does the pickup need to be , my friends Avanti the pickup would only extend about 1/2" or so and never had any issues with cooling or pressure. So my plan was , hull pick up down low just before the padded section of my hull and like the Imco one to my sea pump then into the heat exchanger and back out into the exhaust manifold... rather straight foward.
