I read a while back to use engine paint. I tried it out on a boat windshield frame and to my surprise it held up flawlessly. the old or original paint had flaked off in several areas and looked terrible.

We've had excellent luck with Krylon Fusion. Although it's really made for plastic, you can really use it on anything. We spray small aluminum pieces regularly with it and it holds up great.

I have good results with the professional series of rustoleum(tall can thats says pro) I know lowes has stated carrying reg grade in a tall can and is pissing me off, rep at rustoleum told me there is a difference in the paint.

X2 on it's all in the prep. Use a good zinc chromate primer, use acetone to clean the aluminum, get rid of any oxidization, then what paint you use will be secondary.
