Ford install with a Merc Sterndrive?

I was wondering if there would be any interest in a magazine article about installing a modern 302 or 351 Windsor Ford engine into a boat with a Mercruiser Alpha sterndrive.
Any response would be welcome.

dennis,

I have always been a ford guy, i own only ford cars and trucks..
But when it comes to marine , i think people feel the parts are just not available.. i think it would make an interesting artical though......

i would love to power up a boat with some classic 429 side oilers..

Intolerant1 09-22-2002 06:02 PM

I would be real interested in seeing the results of a built Powerstroke Deisel in a performance boat. 400 hp and 700ft pds seems pretty easily accomplished with pulution comntrol devices. I imagine a stripped down marin version would be killer and never understood the lack of interest in trying the application. Personally, I love the whine of my PDS turbo and fuel mileage/longevity is killer. If you have any thoughts or info on this I would be interested.

Keep to the subject!

Dear Intolerant,
We are talking FORDS here!!! Stick to the subject.:D

Are you talking about the way it was done in the mid 70's?

Fords

I was thinking about doing an article on swapping a V8 into a boat that originally had a four cylinder. I could put in a Small Block Chevy but I thought that maybe some people might be interested in a small block Ford. The 302 Fords are becoming very popular with automotive hot rodders (5.0 Mustang GT's) and I thought that some of them might also like a boat with a 302 or a 351 Ford. I don't think that there is much interest in building a big block Ford for a stern drive because the parts are very expensive. The Ford would be carbureted.

Sick man is right!

I am a Chevy man through and through! But there are lots of misguided people out there! (Ford lovers):D Ha Ha!

I see this is going to get ugly. :D :D :D

turbo2256 09-23-2002 06:32 AM

I have a pair of 351w turbo motors I would like to put in a boat with brovo s they eat alpha s like they were candy.

EX20 09-23-2002 10:04 AM

Daddy Likey!

You need to get a nice 347c.i. fuel injected stroker motor in a boat. FORD speed shops all over the country are starting to develop these torquey motors. I would think it wouldn't take much to set them up for marine use.

Dennis Moore 09-23-2002 10:12 AM

EX20

Now we are talking! There must be lots of people like you out there that are into these 302, 327 and 347 stroker motors as well as the guys that are into the 351 and 392 stroker motors.
Lets here from some of them!
Dennis

PS Maybe I am on the wrong forum, not to many small block guys here?

Masi 242,
I know what you are saying but true Ford lovers are immune to such comments. Come on guys, I need more Ford people to respond wth some good opinions. No more jokes please! (I should have known this would happen if I mentioned FORD to a bunch of boaters) :D
Dennis Moore
PS I will be very objective if I write the article, no Ford jokes I promise!

What a coincidence!! Last night I saw a commercial from Toyota about a 295hp V-6....and I thought why not in a boat???? very small v-6, you could mount 3 of them in a BB engine bay!! Or even couple them together in a common drive system ( see HOT BOAT) coupling is being tested right now. So, yes Dennis, it would be interesting to see small block FORDS in a boat, they can make considerable power in a small package and lots of blocks & parts available cheap. Merc has too much control of the marine market & keeps prices high artifically. They do need competion!!:)

ForrestC 09-24-2002 04:17 PM

The F-word!

Write the article Dennis! I did it in my '72 16 Donzi / 302 Ford motor coupled to an Alpha SS outdrive, and I might add that I am very pleased with it's performance. The trick is to find an old Mercruiser "888" bell housing and coupler and you are in biz!

Tejas Raz 09-24-2002 09:09 PM

Hey ForrestC, who's that other Donzi on here with Ford power? He needs to jump in here. Last I remember, he was asking about cyl heads...

Tejas Raz 09-24-2002 09:19 PM

I've got a very good friend who bought a 86 Wellcraft Nova II XL 26 who'd have loved to put 351's in it. He's so Ford it's nuts, but man can he make em talk. Drag raced them for years. He ended up building a couple of sbc 383's for it because of lack of knowledge of the parts situation. In fact, I'll be posting a few questions about those engines real soon for him. He doesn't do computers. Do the article Dennis. There is a need.

Remember at one time Ford just about had the marine business wrapped up if things went a bit differently we might be trying to put Chevy engines in out boats etc...

I build engines as a hobby I design them for a living. I typically never do any bashing because of an engine or vehicle/vessel someone wants to modify or just keep working. But I will bash all engines for they all have thier quirks , short comings, poorly designed components and comprimized systems.
I beleve Drew Marine markets a kit to put a 460 infront of a Brovo drive and I would love to see one for the small block Ford and hey a Chry or Olds a Pontiac..... I had one truck that had mounts in it for 5 or 6 different engines just what was around at the time.

Found On River Dead

Just kidding, but I am sure there are some Ford people who would want one in their boats.

How about a couple of OHC-Hemi's ???? it couldn't hurt!!:D
