Batteries

Looking at battery replacement this year, what is everyone using? I had the Die Hard Platinum but they are no longer making them.

I picked up a couple from West Marine. I've used them in my Thunder and never had an issue. If you can catch a sale, they weren't too costly either. I've always wondered what is the best option too

There was a thread a while ago with a guy that was going to get those real small/ light lithium ion or whatever they are batteries. I don't think he ever posted how that worked out.

3pointstar 03-09-2016 08:24 AM

I know this may not be the best solution -- I go to Farm and Fleet and just buy the least expensive battery that will fit with the correct AMP's and Cranking Power -- then every other year swap them out.

I've tried the real expensive units in the past and to honest I never had real good luck with them -- it seems after a year or two they all peter out!

just my 2 cents

I run Odyssey's as I'm restricted by the size of my custom battery boxes. Otherwise I'd be running Interstate.

I wonder why people have so many problems with batteries? Switching them every year or every other year seems crazy to me.

The battery in my truck I bought in Oct 2005 and still starts the truck no problem even when it was 10 below this winter. Its an Energizer.

The batteries in my 206 formula were used when I bought it in 2010 and show no issues. I just tried cranking the motor with each and the motor spun fast, batteries have been sitting out in the cold all winter. I can't remember what brand those are.

I did this last years with a couple boats. Upgraded the race boat bat's and then the old ones go in the next boat and so on and so on. The oldest battery (6 years) out of 8 swapped around that was still 100% was a Kirkland brand from Costco.

Odyssey made the Die Hard Platinum that was discontinued. Just got two for my F250. Check their website.

The last couple sets I have bought were exide nautilus that I got from Menard's of all places. They had the best price that I could find on anything name brand.

Most problems with boat batteries is the owner.

Some people can knock over a barn by looking at it.

Best battery I've owned

Sam's club has Duracell branded marine batteries at the best prices I could find last year. Even had really good prices on the AGM batteries. There are only 2-3 real battery manufacturers out there and most brands just are different stickers. If I recall correctly Duracell brand is made by Deka, who also makes NAPA batteries.

liquidlounge 03-09-2016 01:21 PM

All my battery issues vanished years ago when I switched to deep cycle batteries for starting.

14 apache 03-09-2016 01:24 PM

Most exide batteries I have seen leak acid around the terminals I wont buy them anymore.

Griff 03-09-2016 04:35 PM

Interstate batteries have always worked great for me. Never had one fail that wasn't at least 5 years old.

Pwraddr 03-09-2016 05:21 PM

The key is how they are cared for IMO.

vintage chromoly 03-09-2016 05:29 PM

Had an odessey (sp.) deep cycle that lasted 11 seasons.

mike tkach 03-09-2016 05:58 PM

i have the marine battery,s from autozone.about 110 bucks each,so far so good.

zz28zz 03-09-2016 05:59 PM

I heard Costco was now selling Interstate marine batteries, but I can't confirm that. That's where I'll be looking first when the time comes.

bsboss 03-09-2016 06:13 PM

Just switched to Odyssey, no more flooded batteries for me!

eightsecmopar 03-09-2016 07:31 PM

I like the Odyssey but the $400 per battery is tough to swallow!

1989mach1 03-09-2016 07:41 PM

I have been running the walmart marine deep cycle batterys for about ten years now and have never had any problems. Just picked up two new ones today 750 cranking amps for $81.67

14 apache 03-09-2016 07:59 PM

Have ran the optimum battery's think they are pretty good.

ICDEDPPL 03-09-2016 08:07 PM

Ive started putting in Interstate in all my cars/boat/ company trucks. Never had any good luck with Optima.

14 apache 03-09-2016 08:21 PM

Pretty funny I buy optima batteries from interstate must not be to bad.

Speedracer29 03-09-2016 08:45 PM

20 years ago when I sold batteries, I wouldn't have used an Exide in an enemy's lawn mower, and I swore by Johnson Controls. Things change. Now I use Exide Nautiluses due to price and availability. I can't speak to their longevity as I haven't kept a boat for more than 2 seasons in a long time, but I haven't had any duds, corrosion issues, or starting issues. If time and money were no object and I knew I was keeping the boat for years, I'd probably make the effort to locate an East Penn/Deka, but they closed my local NAPA.

I feel like that guy when it comes to batteries and can't figure out why. Mine are always on a maintainer if not in use, new cables, clean terminals, etc. I don't think I have gotten more than 3 years out of any yet, most seem to fail right after warranty is up. Maybe it's my love for rough water running, might beat the plates loose inside.

Steve H 03-10-2016 12:28 PM

I sell batteries, and have had good luck with the Exide Edge AGM batteries in boats, and they have a great warranty.

Equalizer 03-10-2016 08:04 PM

I have spent a lot of money on Oddesy, Optima, custom 16v batteries, they all have not impressed me. Go buy any decent Marine battery dont waste your money.

your driving makes for bloody body parts, So killing batteries would also make sense. HA

A number of years ago I read an article that compared the use of a battery in an auto and a boat. I would have thought that a boat battery gets the snot beat out of it - with all the waves etc. Turns out it was just the opposite. An auto/truck battery gets a heck of a lot more abuse during use- more vibrations, and bumps-- some engineering type did the study. If I ever find the article I'll post it.
