Where to buy gen 6 7.4L long block

Replacing a 2000 model 7.4 mpi. evidently I had a leaking riser, and water sat in the cylinder over winter. I am looking for the best place to buy a long block. Is there a vendor on here that is trustworthy, and also stands behind their products? thank you for your suggestions.

NEW 454 (7.4L) LH 330-350 hp Gen VI Roller
Oval Port Head $5,199
Includes cast aluminum valve covers, hydraulic roller lifters, 8 qt marine oil pan, composite timing cover, harmonic balancer.

There is no provision for mechanical fuel pump - electric fuel pump
must be used.
here is the link, I have used them for new GM marine engines that I install in customers boats and never had a problem. The remans they sell I did. but not the new ones.

well i used a few different reman places, 1st mate marine(aka;mashall engines in nebraska), hesco, atlantic engine exchange in lynn ma. and Marshall engines in skowhegan maine. had issues with most of them. NEVER had an ISSUE with any of those new motors. NEW is the way I go. UNless you want to do a custom build and know a good shop...

Didn't we go over this same topic in a thread yesterday😎
My new engines 502's did come with fuel pump provision with a block off plate. The cams do not have a lobe to run them. I had Bob M grind new ones with the lobe. It's my understanding all the new blocks are being cast with provisions for fuel pump. My 2cents

Yep, and we will probably see a lot more threads like this in the coming weeks and folks "wake up" their boats and find out that their winterization was not as thorough as they thought, or they fire it up for the first time this spring and it pukes, etc.

Most of the Gen VI 454 blocks I have seen do have the provisions for the fuel pump. 502 blocks usually did not have them, but the later castings went back to them. I don't think any of the Gen V blocks have them - GM started adding them back when they revised the Mk IV block with the Gen VI.

I read that entire thread, and to be honest didnt get the info that i wanted. I wanted opinions on reliable sources to buy from. All i seen in that thread was places NOT to buy from.

Has anyone looked into Ateco. Aren't they doing some sort of marine crate motor? They are a legit shop so I'd expect a decent engine. Price?

No enfines but I have gotten parts from them without problem. I googled complaints on them and found 2. Considering the amount of time they have been around and the volume they ,ost like;y do, Idont see 2 complaints being a problem

I got burned but good by 1800runsnew !! Granted it was on a reman , that was supposed to be new, I still have the ad somewhere, guys name was JT or something like that, real D.B. ! Should have sued his ass but just wanted to go boating. Was prob 10 years ago, learned a $5K lesson on that one. Ended up going with new short block. Hard to go too far wrong with new. I purchased my new short block from Scoggin Dickey down south .

Im sorry to hear that you got burned on a Reman like I have more than once....
the remans that 1800runsnew are from marshalls engine in Nebraska

who is aka 1st mate marine, and blueprint engines. Thats the only brand reman 1800runsnew sell and when I had issues with the remans i had bought from them years ago I dealt directly with marshalls. JT and John at 1800runsnew are salesmen. They both went to bat for me on those occasions but because Im a professional installer, I was better off speaking directly with the warranty/re-manufacturing co. Which I learned.
I have heard that marshalls in nebraska has cleaned up thier act somewhat but I would never go back to remans for sterndrive engine needs.

on another note; I do use a reman company for outboard powerheads that we dont do ourselves though, any time I have an issue with one of those they send me another lickity split Outboard recycle inc.

flatlanderbill 04-01-2016 08:08 AM

Thanks O'Connor. The ad said new , when I hoisted the second engine after already installing the other , I noticed the " remanufactured " tag and flipped out . Decided to take the loss and get my boat running again and installed it anyway, engine lasted 2 hours before spinning a crank bearing , got no help from the 800runsnew clowns . Pan looked like it was put together dirty , full of sludge. Wont ever do a reman again! Really wanted to drive up to Holliston and hurt someone!!

ezstriper 04-01-2016 08:26 AM

I bought 2 new gen VI 454's a while back no fuel pump boss, found out there are assembled by a off site vendor for GM, using scat cranks, mine had a vibration from day 1, spun 2 rods bearings @ 125hours, now this was in my Gibson that never saw 4000, whole life @ 3000-3400. got nothing from where I bought them but the run around, was not the site listed above. bought new crank from scat factory GM balance, machine shop was barely able to get it to balance !!!!

thehitchmaster 04-01-2016 08:37 AM

As tempting it is to buy a reman at those prices, I can see that would be a huge mistake.

1BIGJIM 04-01-2016 09:58 AM

Why don't you rebuild the engine you have? That way you no exactly what your getting and much cheaper.

Budman II 04-01-2016 10:00 AM

Had a friend who bought a new 502 longblock from 1-800-runsnew, and had no problems with it, but it was a new GM motor, and that was probably 15 years ago.

airjunky 04-05-2016 10:56 PM

7.4 mags i say u should be picky. 7.4 mpi is a truck motor with a $230 gm crate cam. My kids can build one of those that will live and not burn oil.but they are obsolete and have been dying off a freezecracking death for years. Thats the problem. If. Its a mag , i would be thinking about a 502. If its not , id be thinking about a 502 takeout. There is always jasper, just make sure you get the RIGHT CAM .
