35 Fountain with rotten transom.

Just found out my buddies 2000 35' Fountain has a rotten transom. He had a small leak in and his mechanic found it was coming from his Port trim tab.

He got a quote of 10-12K for repair. That seems high. I know its a huge job with removing everything off the transom and engines ect. The boat is in Florida, what is a good price and any recommendations would be great.

there have been many parted out because of this...yes huge job..but not impossible

You might check with Eddie, formerly of Velocity. He is selling boats and doing repairs as Lets Talk Boats. He shouldn't be that far from you and has some of the old Velocity crew working with him.

Ah $hit - that sucks!

Transom replacements are common. I had a buddy who recently got an entire new transom, stringers from transom to bulkhead, outer transom and some of the hullside repainted, and some misc stuff on his 38 Cigarette. His bill was about 10g. He did the derigging and rigging himself. Your price seems high.

10k with him doing the rigging sounds cheap. If you strip it down and just have them do the stringers and transom 4-6k seems the norm. I have done two now.

Doing the derig and rerigging yourself is the way to save on a transom replacement. It's what I did when my Regal needed replacement. It also gave me the opportunity to do some modifications when reinstalling everything.

Either way I feel bad for him. I've read previous threads etc 5-6k for transom alone. Stringer an extra 2-3k depending. That's not including all the r&r. It's is a lot of work. Decisions have to be made and it sucks. If he's not mechanically inclined and willing or able to do all the r&r and some or most of the removal I'd seriously consider parting out. Money ahead??? Gotta weigh out the options. Just to r&r engines, transom assemblies, steering, any wiring, etc. I'd think probably 3k? Plus or minus.

problem is, if he can't de-rig it, how's he gonna dismantle it to sell off parts?
