500 EFI limitations?
 
Thinking of doing AFR heads, cam, bump up compression on a 500 EFI. Is there a point where you need to switch to carburetor or can the EFI handle the bumped up horsepower?

Lots of threads on this, just like the mpi 502 intake it will take extensive mods to get much past 580 to 620 hp depending on ci. The runner length keeps any motor its on from making high rev hp, you can keep adding cam butall it does is shift tq higher, hp peak stays between 5500 to 5700 depending on mods, spend 2500 on one modding it you might shift hp peak higher. I have plans on exploring the limitations of one soon

This. I turned a pair of 500EFIs into 9.8 to 1 compression 540's with ported AFR's and plenums with cams........fully dressed on Precision Marine's dyno they made 630hp, 700 ft/lbs........and maxed out around 5,300. I was told they would have made more hp at higher rpm's with carbs but never tried it.

Yes, I realized this after finding another thread. Thanks for responding. Sounds like a procharger or whipple would do the deal for me without having to worry about the intake and fuel injection. That may be the way I go when i do the upgrade
