is this a good cam/set up for my 454?

alright so I bought the boat (88 formula 242ls) with a pretty freshly rebuilt engine. pretty sure its just a standard 330hp 454. still have to confim but 90% sure its not the mag. anyway some of the parts were added when it was rebuilt and some were on before he had it rebuilt... the specs/parts on engine are

holley 4781-8 850CFM carb
k&n flame arrestor/filter
ngk 4323 plugs
edelbrock single plane 454-r victor intake
comp 11-244-4 cam shaft. http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/c...?csid=406&sb=0

the rest was rebuilt to factory specs/standards as far as I can tell. like I said this all came on the boat but not sure how well of a set up this is and what i should keep/replace.
thanks!

IMO- that is a really terrible combination.

The K&N is a poor choice, the carb is to big, the cam is way, WAY to big, and PLEASE tell me that engine is NOT using the stock exhaust. Do you have any idea what the compression ratio is and what heads are on the engine?

At a minimum you need a new cam, that cam would work in a 540, but no way in a N/A 454 with stock heads.

From what I can tell stock heads. Nothing on the build sheet about the heads besides I think they shaved .008 off and they look original. Yup stock exhaust :/ I kinda figured this was a jank set up but I have yet to even put the boat in the water since the test ride while looking at it.

I don't even know where to go with this. Kinda like putting perfume on a pig. Seriously...

a stock 330 comes with a 800 quadrajet so i would not worry about the carb but the cam is not right.imo it will make less useable power than a stock 330.

Is it just me or do things really seem off?

endeavour32 05-18-2016 10:33 PM

It looks like you have a rectangle port intake from the part number you listed. I would hope they wouldn't put that on a 330 stock head engine. 330's use peanut port heads, (oval port). Do you have a scope? Is so, you can pull the carb, and look down into the cylinder head to see what the shape of the runner is. You could also pull the valve cover and get the number off the head, but that means you need to remove one of the exhaust manifolds.

seemed off even to me haha. That's why I have yet to put it in the water. What does everyone recommend on replacing the parts with?

No kidding- Everything is off. I sure hope they didn't put a rectangle intake on an oval port head. The kicker is the stock exhaust on this combo.

No scope. Would not surprise me if they did...
