What are symtoms of power steering pump going and/or not working well??
Slow speed, fast speed, not real difference (feels "lumpy" at speed, not sure how to describe it)
Running stock merc steering on this boat, gimbal was upgraded to an HP gimbal. And cable moves smooth. It is the original pump for 1990 (not sure what the life spam is either) Thanks for the help! |
Anybody??
Thanks |
describe lumpy better..the pump going away more noticable at low speeds, as RPM's increase so does pump pressure, sounds more like a cable or helm issue but ??

Can't be the gimbal, that is a new HP bravo, moves smooth. And the cable for the steering moves freely as well. So I think it can only be the pump or the power steering rack. If that rack is going, what would the symptoms be of that? |
loosness or feeling darty when turning of to one side of the other

I assume the darty is because insufficient pressure to power the rack, but why the loosness? |
there is a ball & stud that wear that cause loosness, what year boat ?

The gimbal was replaced with the upgraded HP about 5 years ago. The boat and motor are 1990 |
If the pump was bad and you are using a rh prop the wheel would be trying to turn left (at speed) constantly.
|
that should be the old style valve(2 piece) with 2 small steel lines connecting the 2, replace with the later one piece one but you will need to replace the hoses going to pump usually as they use o-ring fittings vs flair, easy change over
