ticking noise?

I pulled into the dock today after about an hour of hard running and my starboard engine was ticking rather loud.
Anybody have any suggestions:confused:

Did you drop your alarm clock in the bilge?

Probably lifter noise start pulling valve covers and checking for problems. Hope its not a cam lobe.

martiniboat 09-29-2002 04:58 PM

I agree with Scott, could be a collapsed lifter.

Ticking is usually a loose rocker arm , bent pushrod , collapsed lifter , or even a rocker stud pulling out of the head , or worst , a worn cam lobe. Here's another one , if it goes away as you increase the speed to maybe1500/1800 rpm it could be a broken return spring in your fuel pump. what happens at an idle ,with low fual pressure the push rod is slapping back and forth...above an idea as fuel pressure increases the arm of the pump is forced back (like the spring should do ) and holds the pushrod tight:cool:

My concern would be with oil pressure. How was it?

At least yours is still running, I didnt get 1 mile from the dock Saturday and lost a motor. Ill be posting details later. What a mess.

THRILLSEEKER 09-29-2002 08:32 PM

oil pressure was fine, I will pull off the valve covers tomorrow and check things.
Thanks guys.

If you need any pushrods, rockers, or studs, let me know. Ive got bags full of stock ones.

sounds like your oil might be to light of a viscosity, its breakin down on ya

THRILLSEEKER 09-30-2002 08:03 AM

Offshore Adiction, I am using Valvoline VR1 Racing 40wt. any other suggestions:confused:

Offshore Addiction 09-30-2002 11:46 AM

may want to step up to a 50 wt if your gonna keep poundin her that hard,or maybe a 40 wt redline, reduce the breakdown under high oil temp......

I had a ticking noise coming from my motor and I found that it was coming from a loosened bolt on my header flange on my CMI's. Tightened the bolts and all is well.
