Aren't you concerned about too much voltage to your batteries ? I forget if you checked voltage at batteries while running. If not, I would.

Full Force 08-11-2016 08:37 AM

Yes I am looking into cause now.

Tim, you still didn't fix the rpm issue I assume? I was chasing this problem forever. And yes, port engine.

SB 08-12-2016 08:05 AM

Sand the bottom of the port side of the boat more aggressively. :poopoo:

Sorry for stupid comments...no way I can help from here I don't think.

Full Force 08-12-2016 08:33 AM

Don't forget your multimeter !

Full Force 08-12-2016 08:53 AM

Got it!

Eliminated572 08-12-2016 08:56 AM

You have probably tried everything about like myself. I thought I was going nuts. Seen a shrink, shes even more nuts. Seen the gas station attendant, he prescribed me to bud light. Life is better now

frickstyle 08-12-2016 09:45 AM

Tim, you have someone to help you tonight? I would love to go, committed to a dinner and didn't think of a friend in need (great excuse to get me out of it!)

Full Force 08-12-2016 09:47 AM

I have a buddy helping, but if you need a good excuse then no I don't lol

Looks like a coil can be fine on a dyno, and not fine in a boat...!!! Engines even, air fuels back to normal...!

also log the (ac) component from the alternator, shouldn't be more than a couple volts.

phragle 08-12-2016 07:10 PM

Was it an MSD?

Yes I had a spare after dyno I never thought that would be issue, obviously it didn't have issues on dyno

And just in case people why we make such statements this thread proves it

all good, no I am swapping ignition parts tomorrow after work, test this weekend, one part at a time, I didn't mess with things on engines much because of the dyno showing same, but ignition can act up in boat and not on dyno, so I am going to start looking there now..

No.

They just don't have last word on actual performance. The performance on the water, or track,or etc does.

It is an interesting thread.

Any new info ?

Full Force 08-12-2016 08:33 PM

Ya me too! Wtf I woukd have never thought!!!

People told me I was thinking too far out of the box, I knew it was ignition when I jetted down and saw nothing on wideband, not bad for a retard that can't build engines lol

My style... "On the dash performance"!!!

SB 08-12-2016 08:50 PM

I had the reverse issue some years back.

Added an MSD and got a lean surge. Removed MSD and everything ran fine.

Fought myself with how and why a lean surge vs a misfire that felt like a lean surge.

Anyway, after fuking around, put he MSD back in and the car responded at the track (1/4 mile) with a few more jet sizes over what it ran previously with the previous good ignition.

The MSD (6AL box , Blaster II coil) was added as a possible upgrade....not because it was deemed necessary because of an issue.

Baja Rooster 08-12-2016 08:51 PM

MSD = Madatory Spare Doubles?

Glad the story had a happy ending!

MILD THUNDER 08-12-2016 09:01 PM

Good stuff. What coil are you using Tim?

phragle 08-12-2016 09:10 PM

OK...I am no engine guru, I have been following various engine threads with wide eyes taking as much in s I can because Im collecting parts to do a motor...

Why do you guys keep running MSD stuff when all you read about is people having problems with it. Is there nothing out there better?? or is better a whole lot more expensive??

Msd... We may talk daytime this winter.... You coming to set it up?! Lol

Full Force 08-12-2016 10:18 PM

Honestly I have not had many issues with MSD, but not opposed to trying new. One nice things is summit stocks msd and they are local to me.

Must have been like glass last night! Smooth camera action @ 5800 RPM. Glad you got it fixed now. I'll be up in a few hours, I'll give you a call and we can go grab lunch somewhere, Westbay for ribs???

Craney 08-13-2016 06:44 AM

Tim have you thought about DUI distributors and what to other people think about them?

Full Force 08-13-2016 06:47 AM

Yes the bay was flat, with smaller props I saw 70.5 in humid flat water..going to put my labbed 25's back on today, bring them back to 5500..

Yes we will hook up I'm sure, scott was talking PIB maybe hmmm

Not nearly as good as a GM HEI.

Full Force 08-14-2016 10:25 AM

That was short lived put 25's back on and dropped 200 WOT On port... I give up, these props were even in Zachs boat... Also high 10's to low 11's air fuel at WOT. Lighter load with 23's must have been the fix not the coil. I give up its slow....

Or... I have 3 sets of props with a crap left, but 2 are mint props labbed.. I think next is to swap drives and see if it follows.

So next question... if the problem goes away with a lighter load (though still a decent load) Is the load with 23's greater or lesser than the load the dyno put on the motor?

endeavor1 08-14-2016 12:42 PM

Is the reluctor clean? Maybe swap out the magnetic trigger? I'd swap all ignition stuff between the motors before I swapped drives.

As mentioned above about the DUI heir ignitions. . . Pretty simple system. I've been looking hard at switching over all my MSD stuff to DUI or something else in an HEI.

Full Force 08-14-2016 01:08 PM

Ok after pulling my hair out thinking again, I called Mild Thunder Joe... We decided it's most likely the extra load on bigger props, making the one emgine go rich and lug, took out 3 jet sizes in secondaries and see 11.6-11.9:1 and both engines 5400 equal, so guess I just needed even less jetting then before the small props allowed the engines to run easier...

I can't say how great of idea it is to have full time widebands to check this stuff! I think we got this now!
