600SCi 5 beep alarm

Looked in my Merc Racing service manual, but couldn't find any info. coming home last night from Seb. inlet, running 3200 r's, SB engine, kinda sputtered, then died. I started it back up, and my friend said he thought he heard valve train noises coming from the SB engines. Shut it down, limped back to the lift, on port engine, put on the lift, and engine initially kinda ran a little rough, bumped the throttle, and engine runs fine, flushed for 10 minutes, about every 1-2 minutes, getting a 5 beep alarm. Any ideas guys?
Thanks,
Dean

Have you scanned it?
How old is the IAC?

Dean Ferry 09-05-2016 11:37 AM

S,
No scanning yet, ICAs are originals, 150 hours on them.

BUP 09-05-2016 11:40 AM

off the top of my head 5 beep alarms the list what I can think of at the moment are

IAC
MAP
Coil pack
Fuel pump
Fuel injector(s)

and if I recall on some engine serial number runs --- high oil temp.

If scan with Diacom and nothing is found, a lot of times or some of the times, the MERC CDS scan can show the fault / problem area.

BUP 09-05-2016 11:43 AM

I would start with IAC and maintain all areas with it properly when changing and see where it goes, I would not continue running for long periods until you fix it 100 % and rescan it.

575cat 09-05-2016 11:44 AM

Smartcraft ? no info ?

BUP 09-05-2016 11:52 AM

^^^^^ Agree but possible does not have it - what year and engine serial number helps as well.

Dean Ferry 09-05-2016 12:07 PM

Guys,
Thanks for the info.

575,
No smart craft installed,

BUP,

Year 2006
S/N: OM955231, and 232. All temps and pressures were good the last 3 days of boating, and we have been boating hard too. and I won't be running her until she's fixed. Just had to flush her for 10 minutes....
Thanks,
Dean

Dean so 575 SCi or the 600 Sci I see 575 posted by you above ?

Also there is 2 OEM service manuals for these one is the mechanical side and the other is the Diagnostic side - which one do you have or both ? I do have the part numbers for these but would have to look it up. I can not remember those part #'s.

Wildman_grafix 09-05-2016 12:36 PM

600sci

Dean Ferry 09-05-2016 01:05 PM

BUP,
Sorry for the confusion, I was answering 575cat Q, just didn't type out his full name. I have 2006 600 SCi's with those S/N's.
thanks
Dean

second that , BUT that being said he said it died when he shut it down .I assume it did restart , 150hrs and factory IAC motors need to be replaced . this happened to us at the shootout in one of our groups 600sci also , it was IAC motor causing the problem .

BUP 09-06-2016 10:07 AM

can swap one from the good running engine, Twins sometimes can be a huge help. If you have not been super cleaning your flame arrestors and control any form of dust / dirt/ carpet/ and so on in your engine compartment - they all are killers for a IAC not to mention piston rings and cyc walls

Have to go back on one of my posts - if I recall CORRECTLY the MAP should be a steady horn for the 600 sci

I still would scan and if all possible with Merc CDS.

Wildman_grafix 09-06-2016 10:17 AM

Bup,

What scanning tool would you recommend. Me and Dean was talking about this Monday that we should buy one considering without one its shooting in the dark.

BUP 09-06-2016 10:47 AM

depends what apps you are going to be scanning all the time and how you are going to be scanning them. I do like Diacom a lot and have used it since 1993. But I also have all the Merc related scan tools as well thru the years. Believe it or not I still like the Merc DDT and Diacom techmate pro hand helds for out on the water testing. I velcro the diacom techmate pro hand held to my arm while driving the boat. I use to velcro the Merc DDT to my leg while driving.

For not in direct sunlite and NOT trying to watch / read scan while running down water ways the laptop software is better. Diacom laptop software / and MERC CDS G3 does work very well. Also laptops hate to be in hot direct sunlite another negative. Very hard to read as well.

See with Merc CDS / G3 it can only scan Merc and Merc Racing and Mercruiser products only.

Actually MERC CDS G3 can work out better for Merc racing apps with diagnostics sometimes as it seems. the downside you have to be a Merc dealer and uses a password protection plus it is expensive.

For the Money Diacom is the way to go unless you work on outboards in the mix other than Mercs.

Diacom ---- You would have to pick between laptop software version or hand held as what would work better for you and the depths of it

Far and away, but the Techmate from Rinda.

I did the same last month for our 600SCIs. With the additional adaptors all the boaters in our group can use it, I should of bought one a few boats ago. Would have saved me time, aggravation, and $.

obrien 09-07-2016 10:47 PM

CDS and g3 are two different programs. G3 will not work on this engine. Also a bad iac will not throw a code. Hopefully the Rinda will help you. If you were closer dean I could take a look at it. Granted we still need to find time to do your lower unit testing. Unfortunately we have been very busy with repairing the race boat

Agreed with IAC and sometimes IAC will show a fault depending on the app but alot of the times will not.

Post # 4 I did Mention CDS not G3 and the rest of my posts about scan tools stated depends on what you have as far as apps - I was listing the current offering as well from Merc and explained dealer only. But that's not true either in some cases. I know many techs that have left the dealership completely and still go under that dealership for usage of G3.

For some reason CDI scan tool will show IAC sometimes where other scan tools won't especially with ECM 555. I have had this with diacom not showing an IAC fault but CDI scan tool did. Just an FYI for whomever

You have other scan tools on the market for marine apps that scan Mercruiser and Mercury among other marine engines just a jist list --- CDI and TEXA, also 2 M pro, - also API marine among a few others that many do not know about.,

Dean Ferry 09-08-2016 07:13 AM

obrien,
thanks for the update. Once I get this taken care of, I'll get with you and Steve and see when we can get together.
Thanks,
Dean
