Easy way to install exhaust manifold
I had a hard time getting my exhaust manifold squeezed between the motors, around the hatch hoist, and lined up and bolts started. I ruined one gasket. So I took a couple extra bolts and cut the heads off, slotted the top of the studs for a screw driver and screwed them loosely into the head. I then installed the gasket on them, then set the manifold on and put in the bolts, MUCH easier. I used a small screwdriver to remove the studs.

You really need to post a copy of this in the "Tech Tips and How To" section.
There's a lot of good tips that should be posted there for all to see. |
Very clever!

I installed my Imco Powerflows with only the front and rear bolts and left them loose. Then I took the gasket and cut a slot below the front and rear bolt holes. After that I simply dropped the gaskets between the head and manifold , installed the rest of the bolts and tightened them all:cool: .
I had to do it that way because there wasn't enough room to use the screw in stud idea. If I removed the hatch lift motor I could do one like that , but with one back on , it was too tight to get the other manifold over the studs:(. To make matters worse I don't think I coud have gotten the hatch lift back in with the exhausts in the way:rolleyes: |
MoPower has it right
MoPower,
You do it the way that I do it. And I believe that Mr. Gasket actually makes a gasket that is already notched for this purpose. |
Ditto, both my mr gasket and felpro gaskets are slotted on the end bolts. I could never get mine on without it.

I just install studs on the head. Then put washers & bolts on after I have manifold up. Make it real easy. Hardest part is putting studs in heads but a whole lot easier that trying to get bolts to line up. Just wish that would work for intakes.

Great idea, Go4broke. It's just a couple of months late. You wouldn't believe how long I wrestled with those manifolds and ruined a couple of gaskets. I'll try it your way next time .
Bo now knows |
That's the way I do it too.

Mopower, Panther and Formula31 - I did it your way also. Just have to get the right gaskets. The engine builders and gasket makers have already been there and done that, thats why these gaskets exist. The first suggestion works also but why mess with it when the right gaskets make it unecessary?;)
