509 MPI Starter
 

Going to be going thru a bunch of stuff this winter and one of the items is the starter. Did all the cable checks, both ends and replaced the starter battery just in case, no change. Only thing not done is replace or bypass the battery switch, and that to is on the list. In any case I think since I'm either pulling the motor or removing a bunch of stuff to get it to the point so I can fix some stuff, think I'll just replace the starter.

Read thru some older post on the API mini HD starter was the way to go. Only issue is that starter is no longer available. Any suggestions on small frame high torque starter?

you can,t go wrong with the late model gm bbc starters and they are coast guard approved.

I'm an api and arco dealer whats the compression ratio of your 509 ? I am sure either company can provide you something. Let me know as I know both companies personally to find out the exact answers needed. THX

Hey BUP appreciate the input, your the one that mentioned the put number in the older thread. Don't know the exact ratio, but I'm pulling 520 HP out of the bored out 502.

Do you have to have the compression numbers?

no not a 100 % requirement but will ask what octane rated gas do you need to run ? That can help as well THX

Had the motor built for 89, and been running 90 without a knock issue

Got it nothing exotic I was just making sure about it. I will call them tomorrow like I said I know them very well personally especially API and the original owner who still works there and runs all of that.
