I put a 502 crate motor in my 272 and could barely get it to 4800 with a 23p M+ and 50mph. I changed the 22g wire to my DUI to the required 12g, straightened out a small kink in the fuel line between the separator and fuel pump and got 5k with a 25p M+ and 58mph. Then I changed the secondary jets from 88 to 84 and and got another 500 RPM and 63mph. You may have improved hardware but the performance is all in the details.

I had an 89’ Sunsation Rocket with the stock 330hp 454 Q-jet and Bravo 1 drive, and that boat would do 62-63mph on gps. I can't remember the prop on it though.

I have seen 049's with more chamber volume than some 188's and 088 mag heads .if you slap them on a block with flat top pistons its likely going to be sub par even with razor thin head gaskets
