TRS to Bravo 1 conversion kit... Would there be a market for one ?

A friend of mine has done a few of these conversions.
I don't know all the details , of the conversion other than you can still use your TRS transom assy. He asked me to post this question just to see if there would be a market for it. If so I guess he would start doing it.
Any feedback would be helpful.

Bravo Shop has a kit. Check them out.

if it was cheaper than the other kits i am sure there would be. I know the stellings extension box conversion is VERY pricey.

It may make sense

I would be interested, but would like to see some results, and gains that were achieved. It's kind of hard swalling the expense of the bravo's if you don't gain anything. I posted a question once before about the Stellings Box, and someone replied saying there was no gain, and the X dimension was not correct.

I'm getting ready to do a swap on a buddies boat,I'll post results but it probably will be spring be for we run it

would like to know more

Alfster,

I would like to know more on how you're doing it? Are you using the existing Gimbal Assembly, and putting on a Bravo Bell housing? Adapting a Bravo Transom Assembly to fit in the existing TRS transom assembly hole?

ANOTHER THOUGHT

Why don't we find a way to put (adapt) a Bravo lower on a TRS upper. I blew 6 sets of TRS lower gears on a blown Top Gun, and never hurt the upper section. JB

TRS SPEEDMASTER

Maybe someone can find an old trs speedmaster we can copy. They held up well.

ALFSTER 10-03-2002 07:48 PM

I'm changing everything from inner and outer transome plate gimble and drive.Someone makes a gasket to convert trs to bravo,I think its mercury when I get the part# I'll post it.We are expecting (hoping) for a 4-6 mph gain.

GregP 10-04-2002 11:17 AM

I'd be more interested on a TRS to Arneson conversion or just a good Non-Mercury drive that would bolt to the TRS gimble. Bravo's seem way to easy to break to be woth spending time and money to convert "TO" one.

The Mercruiser II TRS drive is stronger than the Mercruiser Bravo drive.

I've been looking into this for awhile and would be very interested.I have a merc 1 trans.and thats the weak link in my
system and would like to get rid of it because ther is no room to go forward and add a better trans.

kaama82 10-08-2002 08:18 PM

Greg P, I agree with you, It seems to me all my buddies with bravo's seem to break sooner or later. I have an old Scarab with TRS and have only had one problem in 5 yrs of boating. Sure we suffer a little speed loss, a little hp loss, but it sure is nice to go boating every weekend and not worry about your drives

Mbam 10-08-2002 09:24 PM

John, we are working on that right now. The TRS upper seldom fails. Neither does the Bravo lower. What do you think it would be worth from a money standpoint? As you can guess just about anything is possible, but would it be worth $4000 or so for the new lower and adapter?

If it included a freshened upper (old one as core) and new lower and the 5-6 mph speed increase is real ... probably.

arneson does have a trs to arneson conversion kit. it's $14,000 last time i talked to them.

John B 10-15-2002 10:53 PM

Marc

Would that price include an adapter and a Bravo lower?

Much too rich for me. If it was for two of them it would still be too much.

Reading on the Arneson web site, $14K sounds like a good deal considering what you get.

External hydraulic steering, a drive, a stand off box and a BAM tranny.

Compare that to what an Imco cost, plus steering, plus standoff box. Or even compare it to what the Bmax cost. 14K sounds realistic.

Doug 10-16-2002 01:57 PM

Marc tell us some more about what you have in mind. If it's for a bravo lower I think it might be a step backwards ?

MrCIG 10-17-2002 04:40 PM

Marc, That wouldn't be to bad if it works. We can use my Cig as a Beta site. Good heavy boat. Keep it comming.

Mark
