So I'm looking for advise on my winter project. The boat is a 2001 single engine 28' stepped vee bottom bravo 1 believed to weigh somewhere around 6500 lbs loaded. It had a 502 mpi that I said I was going to leave stock :D. The plan is to install the 540 N/A for now and at some point add a Vortech/Procharger. I come from the car world and this will be my first attempt at a marine engine so let me know if something is out of place or not matched.

Stock GM block 4.5 x 4.25 +.005 decked flat top 9.3:1, .040 cometics
2200 cfm throttle body, Holley single plane 4500 efi manifold and Micro Squirt controller
AFR 315 cnc W/Inconel exhaust valves, scorpion rockers with girdle
Imco power flow's through transom no mufflers
Johnson or Morel lifters
I'm not 100% sure on the cam but thinking .640ish [email protected] intake and 249 exhaust
hoping for peak power around 5800-6000

Thanks for looking.

What Pistons are you going to go with?

I chickened out due to my Eagle rotating assembly, AND due to the fact it was already well above my target hp anyways..

Sure doesn't sound like 1000+ hp at idle.. ;)

Sounds good. But I see a couple things I feel bad for the outdrive and don't forget to use a wheel chock. LOL

Actually, there are 2x4's behind the trailer tires OR the boat would roll out the back of my shop. ;)
I pitched the floor out the back knowing I'd be running boats in there..

Broke the sh!t out of my gimble housing without the blower.. (no hyd steering yet) Boat hooked hard at 80+. wasn't fun.. I've since upgraded boats...

Hookin no fun but amazing how some of us like it in a weird way. Ha. :drink:

[QUOTE=Boatally Insane;4494858]Sure did... :)

did you dyno with your boat exhaust or with dyno headers? Last time I dynoed my blower motor at a different shop all they had provisions for was dyno headers, they were glowing cherry red under boost, the supercharger was pulling in air coming off the headers, we had iat temps over 150 in intake but we were trying to pump 150+ degree intake air thru a innercooler, guys iat for dyno correction was OUTSIDE dyno room, was a joke, wedged a rubber 90 on supercharger which reduced air temps and brought hp up +50 BUT the heat from headers was still so bad the rubber 90 going to supercharger was smoldering, aside from no fresh water supply to innercooler (was using a bucket of ice water and recirculating it) by end of pull the water was so hot in bucket you couldn't really put your hand in it, made 1000 hp with medium pulley and gave up at that point.

Whats the going cost to have the motors dynode per day without fuel?

It was dyno'd in FULL marine dress with wet exhaust blowing in to Bob's "muffler box" so we didn't upset his neighbors.. :)

Around here 500-700 per day.

if the center of the piston is .005 above deck and has .018 out of the bore during cold rock it is .018 above and below center line of piston with a flat top.yes as the piston gets to operating temp it is growing so the .018 rock will be less when at operating temp.so lets say the rock goes to .008 at operating temp, now add .010 for carbon buildup you still need to allow .018 when figuring what head gasket to use.this is why i said i would use a .060 thick gasket.a little extra clearance won,t hurt but not enough clearance will cause all kinds of problem,s.this is how i have done it for 40 years so i guess it is working.don,t forget that the piston rock is .018 during cold running until the piston starts to grow and with the build up of carbon on the piston top one must allow clearance for it.

What gaskets did you use back in the day that were .060 thick? I ran .066 cometic on one of my engines where the piston was out of the hole quite a bit, but i don't remember anyone making gaskets that thick back in the day. I think even today, the thickest fel pro MLS , or any fel pro bbc gasket, is .051 compressed.

I was always under the impression, most performance machine shops, "zero" decked a block, was to get a decent quench height with a bbc using a typical .040 head gasket. I'd assume hes not running an aluminum rod at 8500rpm. Im with ya on having enough clearance, and not chasing a compression increase. My thought on using the 051 gasket, is that its readily avail from felpro and should work fine. Bob M seems to like .035 clearance , which is what I would assume he would have with a piston .005 out of the hole, using a .040 gasket . with the .051 gasket, I would assume .046 clearance. I would think thats plenty , but maybe not.

Tom,
The compression ratio will increase from 8.52 to 8.69 with the move to a .027” gasket from a .039”. That is an increase of .17 of a point and while that may seem insignificant, any increase is worthwhile at that low of a ratio. A .035” piston to head clearance is ideal in a sub 6000 RPM engine with a steel connecting rod. I would advise you to check the RA of both deck surfaces to verify the finish is compatible with a MLS gasket.

Bob

in the rare case i used copper head gaskets and prepped the head&block by putting a groove in the block and machining a reciever groove in the head and a hard wire in the block groove. it is still used today in nitro and some methanol burning engines.you are correct in saying most shops like to zero deck and go with a thinner gasket.now lets say you have a block that has been decked a million times so standard pistons and rods make for a protruding piston.today we don,t need to machine grooves because cometic will make us a mls gasket any thickness we want.
