So I'm looking for advise on my winter project. The boat is a 2001 single engine 28' stepped vee bottom bravo 1 believed to weigh somewhere around 6500 lbs loaded. It had a 502 mpi that I said I was going to leave stock :D. The plan is to install the 540 N/A for now and at some point add a Vortech/Procharger. I come from the car world and this will be my first attempt at a marine engine so let me know if something is out of place or not matched.
Stock GM block 4.5 x 4.25 +.005 decked flat top 9.3:1, .040 cometics 2200 cfm throttle body, Holley single plane 4500 efi manifold and Micro Squirt controller AFR 315 cnc W/Inconel exhaust valves, scorpion rockers with girdle Imco power flow's through transom no mufflers Johnson or Morel lifters I'm not 100% sure on the cam but thinking .640ish [email protected] intake and 249 exhaust hoping for peak power around 5800-6000 Thanks for looking. What Pistons are you going to go with? |

Last time I dynoed my blower motor at a different shop all they had provisions for was dyno headers, they were glowing cherry red under boost, the supercharger was pulling in air coming off the headers, we had iat temps over 150 in intake but we were trying to pump 150+ degree intake air thru a innercooler, guys iat for dyno correction was OUTSIDE dyno room, was a joke, wedged a rubber 90 on supercharger which reduced air temps and brought hp up +50 BUT the heat from headers was still so bad the rubber 90 going to supercharger was smoldering, aside from no fresh water supply to innercooler (was using a bucket of ice water and recirculating it) by end of pull the water was so hot in bucket you couldn't really put your hand in it, made 1000 hp with medium pulley and gave up at that point. |

I was always under the impression, most performance machine shops, "zero" decked a block, was to get a decent quench height with a bbc using a typical .040 head gasket. I'd assume hes not running an aluminum rod at 8500rpm. Im with ya on having enough clearance, and not chasing a compression increase. My thought on using the 051 gasket, is that its readily avail from felpro and should work fine. Bob M seems to like .035 clearance , which is what I would assume he would have with a piston .005 out of the hole, using a .040 gasket . with the .051 gasket, I would assume .046 clearance. I would think thats plenty , but maybe not. Tom, The compression ratio will increase from 8.52 to 8.69 with the move to a .027” gasket from a .039”. That is an increase of .17 of a point and while that may seem insignificant, any increase is worthwhile at that low of a ratio. A .035” piston to head clearance is ideal in a sub 6000 RPM engine with a steel connecting rod. I would advise you to check the RA of both deck surfaces to verify the finish is compatible with a MLS gasket. Bob |

I ran .066 cometic on one of my engines where the piston was out of the hole quite a bit, but i don't remember anyone making gaskets that thick back in the day. I think even today, the thickest fel pro MLS , or any fel pro bbc gasket, is .051 compressed.
