Actually, the builder that dyno'd tim's engines, built a set of 540's using those 290's, with a crane "651" cam, not long before tims went on the dyno. He pulled the dyno sheet from that build, and overlayed it against Tim's. From about 3500rpm, to 6000rpm, it kicked tims combo's azz. Made 670ish hp if I recall, and better mid-upper rpm torque. Below 3500, tims actually made a little more torque, which you wouldnt think with the 290's vs the 325's.

I think the 325/335's are the worst heads they make. I think the 315 or even the 357 would have made more power on Tims.

i think the 315 is a great head and would kick azz on a 540,i would love to see what joe,s program would show with the 315 and a cnc chaimbered 305.my guess is both would out perform the 325,s up to 6500 rpm.

It be cool to see a complete 454 yanked from a 1974 Caprice Classic wagon , freshened up, a flat tappet comp marine cam, and a 671 blower from a swap meet bolted on, against tims 540s . :)

The parts won't be out of the box and fine tuned this round, no cams will be talked about until I have flow numbers and my buddy consults 3-4 cam people usually when choosing marine grinds... I will go with what he tells me since he's handling it but it won't be a quick decision... I am in no rush so to speak, he won't even think about cam until we got numbers and bumping compression some also... so it's not gonna exactly be the exact same combo. Close but some changes made

Boost will always win... tommys 420's with 5 lb pro charger did 704 hp@5900, 650tq@5200... wish I did that lol

Joe, the 540's that made 670's were Randy Neilsons. I believe AFR 315's

If my engines were dynoed in Dyno trim I think they would have done 660-670 ish, the bigger issue with mine was the lack to carry the prop throughout... my old engines moved the boat real nice and instant response, these always felt sluggish

Mike Lewis built a pump gas 565 with the 300 Ovals and it made over 900hp. If you look at the flow numbers of the 300's they are right in line with the 335's all the way to .700" lift. There have been many cylinder head shootouts on 540's and the 300's out perform everything. I think for a low RPM marine build its the ideal head. I was seriously considering them for my 572's but they are a little pricey so I cheated out...

funny you mention that,a buddy had a 27 foot cig copy with a 330 horse 454,he wanted me to bolt on a 8.71 he bought.i told him it would ruin the engine real quick,his responce was,then you can build me a blower motor.i put the blower on with a pair of holley 750,s and we put it in the water,timed it,warmed it up and took off.he cruised around at 3500 for a while and then wacked the throttle.it nocked the skirts off those cast pistons just like i told him it would.

i don,t think those are 315,s,look like roval intake port.
