Mild Thunder almost 90 CUBIC INCHES with the 540s, that alone is HP. Just every combination I look at for a 496s
kit its only two thousand more to do a 540s.
I called chief engines and he is looking into a few 540s shortblocks for me.
Awaiting #s.

The 4 inch stroke, GM Forged steel cranks are tough as hell. They were the chit back in the day, before all these companies came out with "stroker" cranks. Whats good for a guy like me, is you can find good clean used GM steel cranks, for a song these days. Everyones upgrading to "496" stroker motors. Usually, they would have been better off keeping the stock cranks and rods, and focusing on cylinder heads, camshaft, induction and exhaust, but hey, everyone wants to think cubic inches rule over everything else.

Cubic inches are great, if you utilize them. When i see guys throw a 454 combo out, to build a 496 "stroker" , and slap some gm iron heads on it, some silly azz cam, 750 carb, and gain zero speed, its a no brainer.
Blower or not, ive seen 522ci blower motors, make way more power than others blown 572s. Ive seen 468s make more power than others 540s. Na or blown.
Its the combo. Not just the cubic inch. Some of the guys building 2000 plus hp forced induction engines, are finding value in shorter stroke bigger bore engines. Lot less parastic loss, windage issues , and so on.
All i was trying to say, is many times, a persons hp goals can be acheived reusing the stock parts. Ive seen guys turn their HP500 engines into 540s, and reuse the stock heads. They made 560-580hp. Id have rather bolted on some good heads on the stock bottom ends, a good cam, and , chit, if you cant make 560hp from a 502 with with some afr, darts, or procomp heads, something is really wrong.

You'll figure it out. Narrow down a little bit what your looking to do? When you mention cast and then with going with forged you have to pay for balancing. I get it but are heads aftermarket heads a possibility. Otherwise do the cast stroker build and throw a 741 cam in it with a dart intake and be done. Stock heads with a little work probably near 535 hp and aftermarket good flowing 310 cc heads 575 plus.

OK I'm confused again. lol
I just can not afford 540s. even the 496s can get out of hand.
I will keep on looking for quality parts at a fair price, seems to be harder ever year to get quality.

I understand. But if in limited budget I'd personally do the cast stroker assm (4.250 crank and 6.385 rods) and stock set of heads. When money permits get some good aftermarket heads.
