502 Mag Rebuild
looking to have a 502 rebuilt, have some local machine shop estimates with forged pistons, new cam, and new rockers all that of about 4500, does that price seem somewhat right not to cheap or to much? Don't want to have problems down the road. Has anyone ever bought and ran motors from company's like us motors, eastern marine, or one of those places?

Parts aren't getting any cheaper and labor is higher but a lot depends on if you need any machine work. Did you spin a bearing or anything. Just rough estimate for pistons and rings and rockers are 1,500.00. Honing, boring, line boring, block resurface, etc. Just tell him you'd like a written estimate. Complete rebuild kits including gaskets etc aren't really that much but just depends on which one you need. I typically piece meal them together so I don't end up with so much extra.
You didn't mention anything about your heads. How many hours are on engine. Might be time for some new valves. How many hours on engine? Head reconditioning will eat up some bucks in a hurry. |
Cam and lifters?
|
yes new cam he was saying maybe little better cam then stock but not much do to being marine, so would assume new lifters as well. One motor spun a bearing so estimate was assuming crank and all is still usable. Price did include new valve springs and freshening up heads. Motors have 530 hours on them.

If you wanna stay hyd flat tappet put the 502/465 mag cam in. Those run great. Crank grind etc, recondition rods - price seems reasonable. Lot of work goes on with rebuild to do it right.
I didn't think it was to expensive, wanted to make sure it was in line with everyone else for say not to cheap or to high. I was kinda worried about the cam part being a efi motor could the ecu run it or need tuned? |
what year is the engine?
|
They are 98 or 99. Boats a 99

Ive got almost 6k in mine but i bought new aluminum heads which added about $1500 to the bill when it was said and done. Your price sounds in the ball park depending on what is done. Mine didnt include any dyno time but he did run it on a stand to break it in and make sure everything was ok.
