Big cube 454 for fun

So out of boredome lets build a 454.

4.375 (.125 over) and a 4.5 stroke for 541 cubes. Stock block with a horrible rod angle. Good heads, cam, etc.

How does it do?

Made about 650 horse with high oil temps from the friction caused by pistons trying to push there way out the side of the block, then picked up a bad tank of fuel and detonated the crap out of it leaving a good amount of aluminum stuck to the cylinders....sorry we got 18" of snow today and Ive got cabin fever 😁

I wonder how the bad rod angle would be in real life

I know that my girlfriend doesn't appreciate it.

Alot of guys have done 4.375 stroke in a std deck block. David Vizard, in his bbc books, has built some 4.5" stroke std deck setups from a 454 block , and claims they work well, with a lot of prep and clearancing. I don't think I'd do a 4.5 stroke in a std deck for a boat engine though.

most 454 blocks, will accept a 4.25 stroke, with no clearance issues, but, a 4.375, will need some clearancing.

I would keep the bore to .060 over, unless you had some really rare blocks, that can go .100 over, and still sonic test ok.

A oso buddy of mine is rebuilding a pair of 496ci, based off 427 tall deck truck blocks. He had one let go that trashed the crank. I tried talking him into 4.375 cranks for it, since he was buying two new cranks already, (other one was cast 4.25). But, I think his engine builder, didn't like the idea. Which I have not sure why, considering a 4.375 tall deck combination, is a proven combination, from GM and Mercury Racing. I may have even considered a 4.5" stroke, but not sure how much clearancing would be needed in the tall deck truck block, to fit it.

Its just something i was thinking about for fun. I have seen 125 over 454s before though im sure they need to be checked and arent neccessarily for high output. If the 4.5 required tons of clearancing id stick with a 4.375.

I have a 454 out of an 88 1 ton and a buddy that wants to put it in his 78 short box 4x4. It would be low use, and not need to be a high turning engine. Thought it would be cool to make it a 526/540 with some 265 afr or 275 dart heads.

cylinder wall would probably fail, or have terrible ring seal at best...only way to run this combo would be fill the block and run no water..better be drag use on alcohol...

That would be a cool combo. Id prob do the 4.375 stroke, 4.31 bore, for a 510ci. Some afr 265s, dart 275s, trick flow 280's.

The trick flow 280 ovals are supposed to be pretty awesome. Comparable price to the afr 265s.

The walls are about .375 now so its pretty thick. After a .125 bore it would still be over .3
What is recomended minimum wall thickness for a NA motor, no nitrous or anything?
Wont bore it that far, just curious.

Check out the video. Don't pay any attention to the Big Mac wrappers. Lol...
