A friend tells me he has been offered a couple of vintage 482 mercruisers..What are the ingredients that were used in these engines...They have been in dry storage for years and know they will need some love ...Just trying to figure out if they are worth fooling with......Assuming good condition .thanks for any input

Gosh you got me on this one. Looks like a quick search brings it back to the mid 80's era possibly. About the time I was in my first sbc liberator at 19 yrs old. I'm interested to see what comes of this however I wouldn't invest much if any into these unless they have some restoration value. I would think they would have forged internals but would plan for complete disassemble and rebuild. Hopefully someone chimes in with more knowledge than I.

Early Merc turbo motor.

Those were old Tall decks.

I know they are old and I assumed tall decks, I don't think they are turbo motors ..Haven't seen them but he is supposed to get them next week then i'll have a clue .I was just wondering if anyone had any info on what they actually are .I believe they were made as Kiekhaefer Aeromarine ..Don't think they are big power in todays world but wondering about hard parts. If I buy one or both from him I doubt he'll be all into me taking it apart to see what it is,before he's paid ..Haven't talked money but I don't look to pay much

If they are not the later Merc 482 cyclones then they are 427 tall blocks stroked to what is a Kiekhaefer 482's (I have 2 in the race boat punched out 60 over to make them 496's). I have build sheets down to the last gasket if its a real K motor.

Back in the 80's, Mercury had the "Cyclone" series of engines. They were considered Production Performance engines by Merc. They consisted of a 370-400-420-440-460 "Cyclones". The 460 was 482 cubes. It had a 4.25" stroke polished forged crank, all the good forged internals as well as a multi angle valve job on the rectangular port heads. Dual plane intake with an 850 dp holley. 288*/296* .549"/.558"cam and aluminum roller rockers. 9.2:1 compression. All the info on that engine can be seen in the Mercruiser Service Manual #9.

Really need a block number to nail down the year to tell what motor it is.

The flat tappet cam in those Merc 482cid/460hp engines were the same cam that was used in the 454cid/440hp Mercruiser engine.
Cam duration specs were 231°/239° @.050" Lift
(288°\296° Advertised duration)
Cams were manufactured by Ultradyne
