502 mag MPI cooling system

Anybody know where bits of impeller end up in this model?
Straight to the heat exchanger or in the fuel cooler?
Thanks

Can depend on the year, what's your serial number?

Mine would be the oil cooler, PS cooler, then cool fuel

fastlane40 03-30-2017 02:47 PM

Can't get serial now but looks like a straight tube on top of the bell housing then fuel cooler.
Out of raw water pump, straight tube then fuel cooler?Sound right?

I think its a Mercruiser correct ? and what year model ? and what model 502 meaning is this a 502 Mercruiser MCM or MIE or in a jet boat app ? is this a completely OEM stock set up. all of this really matters to what exactly you have so all the guess work is taken out of the mix to get the proper answers to your questions.

and lastly your Engine serial number is ?

That sounds correct for most of them. Mine goes from pump to the oil cooler (across the bell housing) and them PS cooler only because it was modified. Yours would probably go as you saying without knowing anything else about the motor

fastlane40 03-30-2017 02:56 PM

Can't get serial but its a stock 502 MCM mag mpi.
By looking without dismantling(its a new motor) it looks like the fuel cooler is the first stop.
Does not look like a oil/power steer cooler on top of the bellhousing.Looks like a straight through pipe.
Just trying to work out where to look for debris after the raw water pump.

fastlane40 03-30-2017 03:14 PM

Thanks.
Just checked my manual and it is shown as being a power steering cooler on top of the bell housing.
Mine does not have this.It is a plastic straight through tube. Will get serial number.

If you have hydraulic steering you will not have a cooler. If it is a twin engine install, then only one may have the PS cooler

fastlane40 03-30-2017 03:27 PM

Well i just checked and i can find no power steering cooler.
Can't think that Merc would delete it even in a twin installation.
Serial is OLO17278.
Guess i'll have to fit one.

PARASAIL941 03-30-2017 03:47 PM

The fuel cooler and the power steering cooler are non- restricted pass through designs ( no small tubes in cooler). Oil cooler should be first to catch debris. Good Luck!!!

This was an old 502 Mag that I had. Check out the rocks in there. This is the oil cooler if I remember correctly. ...and it also had a PS cooler plumbed before the cool fuel. Oil cooler was last in line (again, if I remember correctly).

AllDodge 03-30-2017 04:17 PM

If a PS cooler was not installed then you don't need it.
Don't see any of the boats in your sig would have PS

Which boat is it?

fastlane40 03-31-2017 02:08 AM

Took a 350 out of the scarab and putting in the 502.
Will need to fit a PS cooler. Can't think of why it's not on there.
Even if this 502 was meant as a twin install normally as far as i can remember Merc left everything on.
Anyway guess i'll go dig out a cooler.
The race boat is full hydraulic power steer,Eliminator the same,Fastlane 40 before that and Stinger 222,

LT1GMC 03-31-2017 05:52 AM

I would check all coolers anyway. On mine the engine oil cooler is last in a line of the three coolers and it was almost totally clogged with seaweed and smaller bits of impeller. This was a boat we just bought with 270 engine hours.

What he said..

Backflush from far forward as you can get..

ALL_IN! 03-31-2017 07:30 AM

On my old 502, the PS cooler were not non-restricted as others mentioned. It had the tubes in it, just like the oil cooler that I linked to. Funny how large $hit could pass through the PS cooler, through the open fuel cooler, and end up clogging the oil cooler. But it did.

Pismo10 03-31-2017 07:51 AM

My `96 has open PS cooler, tubed engine oil cooler and no cool fuel. I still have the VST. First year of the Gen VI tho which is nice.

fastlane40 03-31-2017 03:50 PM

I'm going to fit a cooler with tubes from a 500efi.
