Prop Choice Right or Left Hand? help
 

Just wondering what the pro’s and con’s of going from a right hand rotation prop to a left hand rotation on a single engine application with a bravo 1 drive. I’ve got 400hr on the drive and just seems that by switching rotation I may have gear problems sooner than I should expect?? Any thoughts??? I only ask due to I have found a good deal on a prop but its left hand. Don’t want the good deal to cost me big down the road.

Not sure but most people with singles like to run right hand if they can as a left hand rotation loads the top of drive. Tries to push the top out. Many improvments in top caps have eliminated most of these problems. I have run both RH an LH on my boat. My particular setup does not run well with RH props. Prop rotation can greatly effect the handling of a boat when changed. Maybe some other powerquest owners will have some expierance and share. I personally would be more concerned with how my boat handled than hurting the drive. But that is just me. :)
What kind of power are you running?

454 mag. Do you have twins or single setup in your boat?

29' Profile Deep Vee. 97 model with straight vee no step. Single 502MPI mag. Original set up. When I put a 540 1071 blower motor in I treid to run RH props but the boat tried to roll on it's side and really handled like sh!%. Went back to LH prop. Some of the single engine Fountains like the 27' run LH to. Just depends on the boat.

With the R/H prop was it the starbird/right/driver side of the boat that lifed up and the other side was low? Did speed or trim level it out? My budys 97 27 fountain is a lefty and it fly'es real strait and level.

You could level the boat with trim tabs but you had to run so much tab it did not handle well. LH is straight and level. My drive is a little deep and with a 4 blade and the bigger power the prop still tries to handle the boat a little. 3 blade the boat handles better or is more forgiving but I usually run the 4 blade, much less cavitation and low speed running is no comparison. No steps or pad so it will not have the speed of that fountain but it cuts the water like a knife even when it flies it lands very softly. I learned that boating is a compromise when it comes to speed and comfort at least in the price and size range of boat I can afford to run at this time. :D

The reson I ask is my 23' Wellcraft Nova rides low on the pasanger side at 1/2 throtle and middle of the road on trim. even when it is just me in the boat. The tabs wont even level it out all the way. I never thought about trying a lefty on it. Any one have a 23-24 pitch 3 blade lefty I could rent? charlie

I agree with everything said, I my 27 2001 Fountain has a RH XZ drive from Fountain it is the only one I know of like this. At crusing speed it does list to the left, but top end is level. Its not bad though, usually I am the only one who notices. My old boat was a 1998 Fountain 27 with LH it was level.

I have a 96 27' Fountain with a stage II Procharger and my boat runs better with a rh prop, lh props chine more and are no faster than rh! In the past 18 mos I have tested at least a dozen props and currently run a labbed Bravo 1 32 at 5200 rpm that I got from Throttle-Up a few months ago.

I have never had any chine walk issues with my boat. Although in my case I really did not try but maybe 3 different RH props before giving up and going back to LH. Maybe I just can't go fast enough. ;) Props are like a black art to me. I just don't know enough to understand I think. I have ran two identical props as for manufacture and size and gotten different results. :confused: Maybe not so much in speed but how the boat handled. I think you just have to find (trial & test & test & test) till you find what works the best. Then if you want to squeeze a little more out of it work with getting that prop labbed and then hope you never hit anything and ding it. I have heard and been told set-up is everything and I honestly believe that to be true.
