Omc cobra outdrive vs king cobra outdrive
 

I have an 1988 19' invader boat with a v8 motor in it. The out drive is an omc cobra outdriv le but the gears are all stripped out. Would a king cobra outdrive bolt right up to replace the cobra outdrive? The king cobra outdrive also came off of a boat with a v8 motor in it I just don't know the years or anything of the king cobra outdrive. What are the differences in the king cobra vs the cobra?

If it looks the same up top it will fit. IIRC some of late KC drives had diff upper housings. The early ones all fit same gimball ring with bigger lower gears and some different ratios. So the King will most likely fit your boat and then you may need shorter pitch prop. BTW, I have a stainless 18 inch Cobra prop.

The cobra is comparable to an alpha ( dog clutch in lower) the king cobra is comparable to a bravo( cone clutch in upper)....they did have a 460 ford coupled to a cobra that they called the king cobra( they used the v8 outboard lower gearcase as I recall) right before the cone clutch king cobra came out( much like the 1st 454 magnum w/
Alpha)..if you were to find one of these, I believe it would bolt up, but I believe they only had a 1.33 gear ratio so you would have to drop down in prop size, the cone clutch cobra wont bolt up

There is a company that makes a conversion kit (OMC Cobra to Mercruiser Alpha) by changing out the bell housing and other parts. No need to replace the whole transom assembly. Then you just need and Alpha drive. Food for thought.
