Are these Merc Gear Lubes the same?

3 Attachment(s)
Who knows their crossovers of the Merc Gear Lubes from Quiksilver to Merc Race? I know in the past there was just a single letter designation difference between the two (Quicksilver and Merc Race). Is the Quicksilver Extreme Performance Gear Lube 85W90 (Part # M0111677) the same as Mercury Racing Gear Lube 85W-90 ( Part # 8M0078015) ? Going to use in XR drives so want the correct gear lube.

Update 5-9-17, called Merc Race and posted at the bottom of page one of this thread the answers.

I would say yes. All QS stuff is the same a Merc stuff and just re-labled so it can be sold by non Merc dealers.

puzzleboy 05-09-2017 02:19 AM

No.

VoodooRob 05-09-2017 05:07 AM

Bup do you know?

ziemer 05-09-2017 05:54 AM

Unless they changed the name, the Quicksilver good stuff was labeled High Performance Gear Lube. And typically, my local Walmart carries it and has the best price around $11-$12. I also want to say the color is different between the regular QS gear lube and high performance.

HyFive578 05-09-2017 06:00 AM

Mercury High Performance Gear Lube is part number 92-858064K01 and is different than the ones you have shown here. It's a straight SAE 90 weight. That's what you should be using.

Edit: The SAE 90 product is what I used to use. I see now that Mercury has a Extreme Performance Racing lube that is 85w90; I assume that's what you're showing here. I now don't use either of those. I use Torco RTF.

As Griff Mentioned but from Mercruiser themselves

The Quicksilver brand delivers the exact level of quality as its parent brand, Mercury Marine. Quicksilver products are true original equipment manufacturer (OEM) products. In fact, the word quicksilver is another name for the element mercury.
Mercury equals Quicksilver. The difference between the two brands is where they are sold. Mercury products are sold only by Mercury Marine dealerships. Quicksilver products are available in retail stores, independent marine dealerships, powersports dealerships and local convenience stores.

No name change. This is a new product. The new oils are shown in the opening thread. Merc says higher performance than the 'High Performance Gear Lube' most of us have been using for years.

Note to answer the last statement, the Premium gear Lube was made by Citgo, the High Performance Gear lube by Belray. I do not know on the newest 85-90 Extreme / Racing Gear Lube.

VoodooRob 05-09-2017 07:44 AM

I just called Mercury Racing and talked to Arnie, very helpful guy by the way. He says that the above 2 oils (my pic in opening post) are the same exact oil, and as Griff stated, packaged for different sales venues. Both oils are brown in color and replace the blue oils of the past, these oils have been out for 2+ years according to Arnie.

Mix it all together and go boating... XRs have a finite lifespan anyway:evilb::lolhit::signs069:

I was just discussing this with the guy who services my drives. He was a staunch advocate of Torco RTF in #6 drives and recommended I switch to it last year because he felt it was better than the HP gear lube (SAE90). I had very good results with it albeit it is expensive and requires changing at a more frequent interval than the Merc. stuff. He told me this morning that Merc. reformulated their gear lube to the one mentioned above and now he recommends I switch to it over the Torco as it was targeted specifically for Bravo drives. FWIW.

There is a difference between the High Performance Quicksilver and Extreme Performance Quicksilver, consider it medium duty and heavy duty. In the past, the item #s were just one letter different from comparable oil\lube when comparing Quicksilver and Merc Race. Now Merc Race uses totally different item #s for the comparable Quicksilver/Merc Race throwing a wrench into everyones trained way of thinking.

This is why I'm sticking with the Merc Gear lube....for this year

I thought the straight 90w was the latest and greatest. It's what I've been using.

Good info here, would this be the best for XZ's also.......I want something readily available and the HP quicksilver looks like the best option

I would go with the Quicksilver Extreme Performance for the XZ, If I had the XZ drive I would want what is the best from Merc. Remember, currently the High Performance is the "Standard" lube, not for XRs, 6s, etc

What you have is the old for standard outdrives. The equivalent to that now is High Performance Quicksilver but that or the 90 w is only recommended for standard medium duty outdrives.. I'm surprised you would run that in an XR. Extreme Performance Quicksilver is designed for XRs, 6s, etc.

Where can I get it ?? I googled this ( quicksilver Extreme Performance Gear Lube 85W90 ) and it just shows the HP version, I tried the part # also

SB 05-09-2017 10:30 AM

Merc has 3 different gear lubes all made by 3 different oil formulators. Citgo is Merc premium blend---- next is Mercury High Performance and I have posted years ago is Bel Ray lower end gear lube, and then Mercury racing is by someone I can not say (expose) for certain reasons but lets just say its a Midwest company.

The Merc racing is their top gear oil and is not the same what you have pictured to the QS brand.

BUP 05-09-2017 11:04 AM

I have all as well the only thing is shipping it to where ever ( the cost ) I would use the Racing Gear oil if one wanted and insisted on using what Merc sells.

RaggedEdge 09-30-2018 05:33 PM

oOdd. I have been caught up in this chit mess for the last year. Put new drives on the Biotch, with a warranty, and decided to run merc lube for break in and for warranty period. Wanted the best Merc Racing had to offer, have been sold both of those shown here as the ultimate Merc Racing gear lube. What they call it is only a marketing deal, believe me it's all the real good chit, hate to tell the dealer that said that to me on here. Perhaps Merc Racing could speak up here and tell we little folk what the fock is what with their products that we all pay dearly for realy are.

AllDodge 09-30-2018 05:41 PM

There is a later thread going on this and maybe just need to go to amsoil extreme, cost is about the same

neva satisfied 10-01-2018 05:47 AM

Sooooo, is the Amsoil Extreme Duty gear lube ther "or equal" to the Merc Extreme Lube?
