Trim tab not going up.
My starboard trim tab is not going up. It is full download and I only get a click when I try to retract it. Motor runs if I push the down switch. Port Tab works fine. Tabs are Dana 1000.
Must be my time for electrical gremlins. help, Padraig |
Most 'un-scientific' but.......
Different tab, K-plane 380 was stuck all the way down on my old boat, had someone stand behind and with all his force, pull the tab up as I hit the switch. He suggested it was stuck at a point it had never been before (I didn't believe they go down so far!) and a solenoid or relay was cutting out when the pump couldn't shift it. Dont know if that makes sense or even if the situation is similar but it worked for me. RR |
the dana 1000 is essentially a k-plane. uses a merc trim pump for each tab. so you have 2 solenoids mounted on each tab motor. have somebody do tab up and down while you are touching the solenoids. you will feel 1 click and motor will run 1 way. other clicks and no motor noise. jump across the 2 top terminals of that one and tab motor will most likely run and tab will retract. now, buy 2 solenoids. install 1 and have the other on board cuz you have no idea which one will bite you on the hiney next.

Solenoid
green - grass down blue - sky up, you ou can get the FORD equivalent ones for about 7-10 bucks. good luck |
Thanks, Guys! If the rain and storms hold off I will do as advised and get it running.

Yep, more than likely corroded contacts in the solenoid. I had the same problem with one of my HP1000 tabs. Replacements can be purchased at Napa. Echlin ST82. |
Cool! Thanks for the part number, Ryan!

that is the same as the starter slave solenoid, and the seadoo starter solenoid. and my riding mower solenoid. it is everywhere and it is a failure-prone POS.

They last 5 years, all the same quality, problem is when boats sit and they aren't used, like the 8 months inNYS.

OK my solenoids are not both the same. They are connected by a bus bar and have two large studs the lower solenoid has 1 smaller stud that has a green wire going to it. The upper one has 2 small studs and have a blue wire and a black wire going to it. I pulled off the lower one with the single green wire and cannot find a part number. Rain started so I didn't get the other off. Both solenoids seemed to click when down button was activated. I am assuming it is the top, blue wire solenoid that is bad.
edit Went to Napa site and Echlin st82 appears to be the lower single wire (green) solenoid I have a pic but can not post pics. padraig |
Touch the 2 big wires together. Tab should run. They're connected by a busbar because that is the main hot that is feeding both of those solenoids. The other side of that is the two wires that run the motor one and one direction and one in the other direction. The little wires are the ones that the button on the dashboard energizes the solenoids. One small wire energizes the solenoid, the other small wire goes to ground to complete the circuit.

Red wire is +12v
Black wire is Ground Blue wire is tab up solenoid Green wire is tab down solenoid |
look like this NIB OMC Starter Solenoid Slave 802418A 1 18-5812 72403 9-15107 982187 985063 eBay or like this. NEW OEM MERCRUISER STARTER SLAVE SOLENOID relay Flat Base 89-96054T they are all the same. little wires, trigger and ground. big wires hot and output to run motor.
|
Nope the single, green wire one looks like this.
https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/ECHST82 Thunder storms are rolling in, will get back in bilge tomorrow and pull other solenoid and hopefully it will have a part number. Thinking I should replace both on both sides. Padraig |
oh. ford starter solenoid. no black small terminal. it is grounded to the metal frame it is made in. works all same same. one big wire hot in, one big wire motor out. small wire trigger. bolt it to engine for black ground wire.

Thanks. Of to NAPA in the morning. Hopefully will find a old fashion parts guy. Seems as if nowadays if you can't tell them what year and model vehicle they are lost!

first, take a pair of pliers and jump the 2 big terminals together to see if motor runs and tab comes up. then call it a 72 mustang with 302 motor. NOTE: you may get a solenoid with 2 small terminals. you only use 1 the one on left as you are looking at it. the one on the right is for hotter spark while cranking points ignition. you still use the body of solenoid for small black wire...75 or 78 grenada or something might get you 1-wire solenoid. as long as they can pull up a pic...crap. go into napa with that page up on your phone...

THANKS!!!!
Padraig |
Picked up nest solenoids from NAPA and installed them. Tabs now work fine. Parts guy was older and walked back and picked them off the shelf. Out of there in under 5 minutes. Old fashioned parts man, don't need no stinking computer. Part numbers were Echl98n ST 82 & 81.
Thanks for all the help and advise! Now I need to do other side.....just in case. Padraig |
