Let's blow up my boat !
How much gas can I pour into my carburetor to try and start the engine and help prime the fuel system once it fires ? I have a fear of exploding bilges.
Recently replaced the remote belt driven fuel/water pump housing and fuel pump plus sorta drained the seperator and fuel line also. I cranked on it and it seems to not prime and don't want to keep beating the starter. ed |
Fill the bowls till fuel comes out into the Venturi. Take a J tube off and pour it in there

Ayuh,.... Pre-fill the fuel filter most of the way, 'n splash a "Shot", 'bout an ounce, of gas in the carb's throat,....
It oughta fire right up,.... |
I cheat. I have a cheapy electric pump with 3/8 rubber hoses attached both sides and alligator clips for the power and ground.
I fill most carb's on my bench after I rebuild them. In fact, it's same set up I use to remove fuel from fuel tanks when I want to refresh with new. The old fuel goes right into my truck's gas fill. :) edit in: always fill water separator/ fuel filter when ever one get's installed. |
Thanks guys. If you don't hear from me tomorrow you'll know I screwed up.:thankyouthankyou:
|
BTW: a carb's boosters sprays fuel just over the throttle blades too. :)

remove one of the top fuel bowl screws from each bowl and put a couple ounces of fuel in with a squirt bottle, push acc pump levers a couple times and reinstall bowl screws, hit key and start it up!
|
This turned out much simpler then I expected. Ihad forgotten I closed the fuel supply valve to the engine prior to removing the parts. Opened the valve, a shot of either and it's running fine.

Can you not prime the system by just pulling the the lanyard and cranking a few seconds? Won't it crank , but not fire???
