MSD is not a step in the right direction. IMHO.

Mercruiser uses the GM / ACDelco distributor. Their parts are much more reliable than MSD's.

Bear in mind this is not a marine-specific distributor. This is an automotive unit with no modifications. Marine legal as-is. Cap, rotor, etc.
