Engine trouble
Hi,
I'm restoring a 1982 Cigarette Squadron Powerboats 27' Hull #27021 HIN: XEX270210882. I installed a Mercruiser 496OH S/N:0W008253 that is giving me trouble. I'm no knowable of new electronic engines. What is happening is that when I put in in drive and pass 1500/1600RPM it appears that not enough fuel is getting into the engine and it stalls. I throttle back and the engine recuperates. Someone told me it could be a sensor and just that, ANYONE could recommend what to look for? Greatly appreciated. |
What is the fuel pressure at the rail? Measure by removing the cap item 17

before anything and even more running the engine around especially on a conversion. I would scan the engine - look at voltage and 5 V reference outputs. Look for available power in the scan, if it shows 100 percent YOU ARE NOT
IN GUARDIAN MODE ie ( power reduction mode ) If it is show less than 100 percent -- you are in guardian mode. IMO this is possible taking place and prob other issues - voltage and fuel issue would be on the list as well.. without a scan tool and posting results - you are throwing darts on a big dart board all over the place. You can check voltage outputs with a Volt meter and check sensor ohms with it as well. number 2 is ---- buy a OEM service manual pertains to engine serial number and the diagnostic manual. A lot of people do not know this --- IMO it is wise to have the first 3 PCM 555 diagnostic manuals and the huge pull out wiring chart if one is going to work on their on 496. 'It is wise to get the smartcraft service manual as well. again if one is going to work on their own app. In comparison to my statement --- Its kind of like the AC guy coming over to your house to fix your broken AC system and all related components - you sure would want him to have some kind of formal OEM training and have some service manuals that applies to the AC units to help fix the issues. Just saying as a valid statement. . I am kind of at lost when boaters work on their stuff indepth without the related testing tools and OEM service manuals and throw a ton of parts and a ton time involvement hoping something sticks for a fix.. |
Thank you for your advice, will work on it today.
Have a great day. |
