Short Distrubutor cap / rotor life
I have a Volvo penta SBC (prestolite) and the ignition caps get a ton of corrosion and it develops a miss abiut every 6 months . Super annoying. The gasket is in plac and can't figure out why. Anyone do a trigger and 8 discrete coils and eliminate the dist altogether?

how often is your engine compartment wet even with a little bit of water ? does your hull hold water / this creates a very humid environment in the engine compartment. Plus being in Florida and salt water does not help either
When you store your boat is it completely dry especially in the engine compartment ? 100 percent dry stored boat ? Which caps are you buying, the brass contacts or the aluminum ? You want the brass. No air movement and or venting - if this distributor has a vent or vent screen(s) at the BASE if I recall possible - make sure they are not blocked. Volvo called this set up BID. ( Prestolite) I forgot if it had vent(s) for the set up at the moment because I have not seen it in years -- Volvo carb with BID ignition ( Prestolite) these were on the 5.0 and 5.7 CARB app only. The CARB 4.3 and 3.0 and used Delco EST.. Also voltage can play a part in this as well. Low or high. Also the ignition sensor module inside the distributor needs to be cleaned off every so many years and reply heat sink compound to the bottom edge. |
Hey BUP your PM box is full. I need to hit you up for parts. Thanks

I have been buying the OEM caps and they are brass. It is a prestolite ignition. Not sure about the vents, I am not sure the distributior will come out of the top the motor due to clearance with boat or I could pull it and inspect. I replaced the module a long time ago, I can remove that and clean it and reapply the thermal grease.
