TRS Alignment tool
Does the TRS use the same alignment bar as the Bravo, or is there a specific tool for the TRS?

Similar. It has a disc that seats in the bell housing. The helmet. Not the flywheel cover which is only called the bell housing on a car.

same alignment tool / shaft for alpha, trs with borg warner trans, and bravo.
trs requires a disc/plate that slides on shaft and into the gimbal housing for checking / correcting alignment. also there is a thread in female spline do-hickey for use w/ the merctrans. it threads into the shafts opposite end (factory mercury alignment tool) what transmission do you have? |
Thanks. I have both. One boat with Merc. trans and one with Borg-Warner

I don't think the disc and merctrans end piece are available separately. therefore, it is a different tool. you could with a set of calipers measure-eyeball a borg setup with a bravo bar. maybe cutting a bolt to the right length to use as a gauge block running it around the circumference of the bar checking left-right-up-down spacing to ring in bell housing (helmet). the merc-borg tool is 150 bucks on up these days. I got it last year for 75 or so. the alpha bravo tool is 50 to 75 bucks. used to be 25 or so. https://s20.postimg.org/mzlcnl6pl/20170923_075641.jpg ok, here is the tool I got last year showing the TRS flange and the merctrans add-on end spline.

If its this part number - this is exactly what its used for in the link below.

Same exact ppr work I got with my tool. Avail. Just waaay more than they used to be. I guess we gotta set up some kind of exchange program. I am near philly. Mine is available as long as I get some assuredness of getting it back...and a boat ride!

yes, i have a special made alinment tool, 3' long, a friend of mine turned it out for me out some kind of special tool steel.
first and second steps are same specs as mercury alingment tool, the rest of tool length is gimbal bearing diameter so it will accomodate the the mercury disc / plate for the bravo and slide in thru the transom assy so the engine can be aligned if it's moved forward and not hanging on the inner transom plate engine mounts. i ordered probably 6 months ago the alignment tool kit that i thought was for bravo, but ended up being the trs kit which i already have so it was returned and after i got the correct part # i bought the bravo disc plate individual of the rest of the kit. so it is still available from mercury, and the pprwrk w/ part # that bup posted is correct. do you have a factory mercury alingment tool ? or do you need all 3 parts, shaft -disc and attachment? |
[QUOTE=dereknkathy;4583953]I don't think the disc and merctrans end piece are available separately. therefore, it is a different tool. you could with a set of calipers measure-eyeball a borg setup with a bravo bar. maybe cutting a bolt to the right length to use as a gauge block running it around the circumference of the bar checking left-right-up-down spacing to ring in bell housing (helmet).
the alignment tool is the same for alpha bravo and trs w/ borg warner trans. the plate for the trs slides in and stops on the drive mating surface, a gap at any position indicates out of alignment it's tough to explain but the plate holds the gimbal housing square, up down and left right, at the same time shows where alignment is needed. so drive mounting surface is parallel in all respects to the flywheel when aligned i think the bolt idea is good, like one of those things that goes down a cylinder and shows out of round, but is bolted to the engine deck. but the gimbal housing moves so the bolt / out of round idea i think would let the gimbal ocillate while rotating the shaft unless it had 4 points, but it wouldnt show square, the gimbal housing could be turned or tilted, at that point, 150 bucks bada boom brand new tool wham bam boat in the water. |
Come to think of it, the plate gets the g-hsng straight l-r-up-down. Wouldn't be easy to wyeball, but if all you have to hand is alpha tool, you can get an idea if u got problems or not.
