opinions / advice, need a cooler

4 Attachment(s)
engines a 496 HO, serial owo 60640.

the power steering cooler has a long tube on it w/ a sensor (probably water pressure)
i need a combo cooler power steering and oil, oil end is for the drive, the new cooler will need a bung on it for the sensor.
the oil cooler @ oil exit point also needs a bung for a temp sender

i want the ends to be threaded so i can put 90's on it and the width about 22 inches (hose centerlines 23-24 inches.

made a pvc mock to help see what i'm looking for, the elbows line up with the water hoses

mounted like this- 3" Low Mount Bravo Oil Cooler Bracket - CP Performance

or, since the engine will be mounted 12 inches forward from stock location, i can use the bravo flywheel cover or a transmission type
in case mounting the cooler on the fly wheel cover has to happen.

i would prefer a dual cooler bell housing but the manufacturer doesn't know if it will work w/ a low mount starter.

so i'm looking for and appreciate opinions and advice for a manufacturer, mounting or any ideas you have ,
thanks

Mercruiser Coolers

Surf through these coolers. Good comapany. You could always plumb AN tee fittings for your sensor if need be I would think for your sensors but I would bet mrcool will have what you need.

They have a lot of OEM replacements.

thank you
i'll give them a call tomorrow.

If you have stock engine with stock PCM you need to put the exact size cooler back in, also do not buy a combo cooler. The water pressure is very important to the cal of the PCM and its guardian parameters.

I've bought all my coolers from Mr Cool. IMO, they have the best prices, and stock just about every stock cooler ever made, and a lot of performance coolers.

I have used different coolers and a blow off valve setup with imco lower on a 496ho. Never had a problem with the PCM throwing codes. Maybe I was lucky. I don't understand if you have 30psi in a small cooler and 30 psi in a big one. Why is it a problem? I thought they only went off at real low pressure?

so that is the water pressure sensor ?
i want to keep the water pressure sensor in front of the cooler exactly the way it is now for the reason you mentioned,
only because i don't know how sensitive this stuff is.

if mr cool could sweat an oil cooler onto the back of my power steering cooler that would be fine, but think it would be cleaner with
90's on each end since the hoses from the sea pump to the new cooler and to the engine oil cooler will have to be changed anyway to accommodate adding another oil cooler for the drive. (attached link for mounting seems best way)

what class 6 said about the pressure makes sense to me.
maybe that sensor verifies pressure between it and the sea pump and temp sensors after the fact
verify it's working inside parameters ? guessing !

i'll hazard a guess that if a cooler was added between the sea pump and sensor that would really upset things,
this is why i'm asking and appreciate the input.

if the pcm can be re-calibrated for things like rev limiter, and let's say it loses 5 psi water and it kicks on the gaurdian
could the water pressure calibration be re programmed as well ? (as long as psi / quantity is enough)

thanks guys,

You can have the 555 water pressure set or deleted off program if you want.

outonsafari 01-10-2018 09:33 PM

^ ^ ^ that's good to know,
i want to run the boat before the decision is made to send the pcm out for any mods like that stage 1 program
if water pressure has to be re set or deleted so be it, it'll have to get whatever is needed plus the stage 1 sooner than later, or if it all
you know my dash / gauge plans so keeping all the sensors on line is preferred
