Outdrive Oil?

I have TRS drives and I use The Mercury "High Performance 2+2"
(the blue stuff) in them.
Is this a good oil or is there better stuff to use:confused:

I use the Merc Hipo stuff but alot of people like Royal Purple.....

the guy who does drives for me swears by Torco synthetic.

I just posted about this a couple days ago. I didn't have much response. I'm thinking of trying the Royal Purple or the Amsoil Series 2000 or even the Mobil One stuff. I looked at the specs and couldn't really determine a winner based on test results. It looks as if the Royal Purple and Amsoil are the best based on their testing with Mobil One close behind.

Torco synthetic is too "thin" for TRS use Mercury Hi-Perf gearoil. Tired of seeing spalled propshafts? these units just weren't designed for that stuff. It's a whole new ball game with drysumps though (pressure lubed). Avoid ultra thin oils in bath/splash units. Is it really worth it for a couple miles per hour? Yes Virginia, Mercury wants the drives to last also. (sorry couldn't help myself)

Been using the Amsoil for years with no problems; first their marine gear oil, then the 2000 series as soon as it came out. Everyone has a favroite but I firmly believe that you will probably be OK with any GOOD SYNTHETIC. Syntheticsl certainly do run cooler and that translates to less wear and stress. --- Jer

Teague Custom Marine just switched from Redline to Amsoil in their Platinum Drives

I ran RedLine shock porrf heavy in my TRS drives on the Scarab. Before i switched to that i ran the Merc stuff and always had those "peach fuzz" shavings on the magnet. After switching to RedLine i had very little of the shavings and the oil seemed to stay cleaner alot longer! Also didnt have that used gear oil smell to it. :)
