Need to change mechanical trim cables and was wondering if anyone would know how long they are I'm guessing one is shorter then the other but I would like to pull the new cable thru with the old one thanks

Rookie 04-15-2018 05:48 PM

The cables have the lengths on them near the ends. Just disconnect and look within a foot or 2 of the end.

Griff 04-15-2018 10:05 PM

The length is in inches and 1-2' from the ends as Rookie said.
Its not a fun job. I just finished doing mine.

we tie a special string fish when pulling out and then tie that fish to the new cable. The string fish I have is old timer stuff that telephone installers used to tie down and fish cables in the central offices were all the big phone equipment was installed including later on fiber optics installs. It is waxed coated string and strong as hell, leaves no marks period. Glides very easily and does not cut into stuff compared to if one would use fishing line as a fish. Works great and does not tear up stuff like a metal wire fish does.

Thanks I will look when I get home tonight what would be the best cables to replace them with I seen on here some people said to stay away from the 33c cables and go with the teleflex just wondering which last the longest only run in lakes and rivers no sea water

F-2 Speedy 04-16-2018 11:51 AM

33c or 3300 is the type of cable ends on the cables, Teleflex is fine, there's an extreme one also I think it has tighter bend radius characteristic's ?

Ty95 04-16-2018 12:34 PM

Thanks I looked for numbers on both sides of cable can not find no markings guess I am not going to have a choice but to pull cables and measure them

Griff 04-16-2018 01:06 PM

I used the TFXtreme ( Teleflex Exteme)
https://www.go2marine.com/product/88...html-401745000

Fishing the cable through was no big deal. Getting it connected to the indicator through an 18" x 24" hole behind the dash was the difficult part.

Thank you I kind of figured it was going to be fun hooking it up to the gauge didn't seem like they gave you very much room going to pull cables out tonight and order and then let the fun begin lol!!

I replaced mine with UFlex Mach series cable. Very nice quality.

Sounds good trying to get enough ambition to start tearing into this project I'm sure there will be some swear words coming down the line lol

When you take the back part off the indicator be careful not to lose parts. All the pointers are on springs.
When reinstalling, they pointers have a tiny hole. Use unbent paperclips through the tiny holes to secure them when reattaching.
You'll understand what I'm talking about when you take it apart.
