500 EFI removing prochargers

Just bought a boat with 500EFI's that has Vortec Prochargers Model# V-4J. Think I want to remove them. Doesn't appear to be too much to remove them, but thought id ask before doing so, whats involved, anything major? Then, who or where would be a good place (in northeast) to take the boat and retune? And lastly, what are they worth, has chillers and blow off valves too?

Vortech is one brand Procharger is another. You could probably go on the Vortech site and look up the installation instructions to see what was changed for the install. If they used a FMU for fuel enrichment you may not have to retune anything after the removal. I would think you would be giving up a 100 plus horsepower each taking the blowers off.

I always thought pro charger was a generic term. haha. Learn something new everyday. Thanks. I was looking thru the Vortech site, I might have to call them to find out more. Stupid question, what does FMU stand for?.... Im guessing Fuel Management (something)?

back in the 90s and into the early 2000s the supercharger companies would sell kits for the stock Motors and just have you jack up the fuel pressure under boost and hope for the best hence fuel management unit or better known as boost reference regulator. it was a terrible way to tune things and crude at best they gave a lot of Supercharger kits a bad name

Gotchya. Thanks.

why do you want to remove the supercharger?

Got Cigs 05-22-2018 05:28 PM

Haha! I knew that was coming sooner or later. For me, id rather have the longevity and simplicity, rather than speed. Called Vortech and they just said remove the parts and retune it.

I'm with Keaton here. A supercharger on the water is priceless. At least drive the boat for a while before removing the chargers. If the boat is in good operating condition you could be opening a can of worms trying to change things.

just dont push the sticks as far forward if you dont want to go that fast.....

He should just put them on a shelf so he doesn’t have to buy new ones when tinkeritis sets in. ;)

I'm sure for the right price they can make it in a box shipped to my house. wouldn't want them to go to waste or collect dust....

Take the blower belts off and see how you like it.

that would be a intake restriction. would also have to pop off the charge pipe as well.

Yes I have tried it on my street car years ago. 500hp small block with blower. A TURD with the blower belt off. I couldn't believe the difference. It was lucky to be making 200-250hp with belt off.

Guess because the motor was trying to breath through a 1/4" gap that covers the whole inside diameter of the blower. like i said above really restrictive.
If he takes the charge pipe off and left the belt on the blower, the motor could breath but would waste the energy spinning the blower ( 15-20% of your flywheel hp ) those should be about 460-470 hp in NA. so that number minus what it takes to spin the blower (~69-94hp)

Ive thought about just running it for a bit with them on, but worried I might like it too much. :faint2: Rather just take them off now, while I don't have a place to put it yet, as boathouse is under construction. Then just enjoy it in stock form.

Removing horsepower..... you my friend, are in the wrong hobby. Better question is can I rig up a way to have these vortex’s feed my whipple.

Not sure on boost. Don't know too much about them, other than they were installed in '07-'08 and have approximately 250hrs. They were waxed a lot too!

Got Cigs 06-01-2018 02:14 PM

Got one of them off last night. Pretty simple really, just some plumbing and brackets.
